This position is part of the Substation Engineering group located in the Duke Energy Progress (DEP) headquarters in downtown Raleigh, NC. This work group is responsible for design of new and existing substations and related equipment. Primary area of responsibility includes civil design in support of substation design projects.
Responsibilities
Perform civil design activities associated with new or modification to existing electric power substation facilities. This includes developing site plans, grading plans, erosion and sedimentation control plans, stormwater plans, stormwater management plans, plan/profiles, access drive design, landscape plans, lighting plans, demolition plans, cut/fill volumes, and associated calculations.
Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs.
Track and obtain various regulatory permits necessary for construction activities, including erosion control, building, driveway, storm water, CAMA, other environmental and local/municipal certificates including rezoning and special use permits.
Ensure that the civil release package meets the needs of construction resources, including bid units.
Prepare/ Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans to meet EPA and company requirements.
Ensure accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities where only limited standardization exists; handles differing situations which require searching for solutions within area of expertise.
Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches with the ability to conduct analysis and recommend process enhancements and standards relative to area of assignment.
Develop positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities.
Demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills. Maintain accurate records and files.
Support the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.
Provide construction support in helping with troubleshooting field/construction issues.
Provide emergency support during storms and operating emergencies.
Basic/Required Qualifications - Engineer III
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (not engineering technology program) from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 4 years of relevant engineering experience.
Basic/Required Qualifications - Senior Engineer
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (not engineering technology program) from an ABET accredited program AND/OR state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience, with state registration as a Professional Engineer (P.E.)
Key Skills/Experience/Certifications
Senior Engineer level: current PE holders: ability to obtain NC/SC PE seal within 6 months if not already registered in either state.
Must maintain or have the ability acquire NERC Certification.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Experience with regulatory permitting agencies (local, state, federal).
Demonstrated knowledge of potential environmental impacts of transmission facilities and experience mitigating them.
Develop and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CADD software (includes MicroStation/AutoCAD) for the efficient production of engineering plans.
Desired Qualifications
Experience in the electric utility industry
Experience with preparing Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans
Transmission experience with design/construction of electric power substations
Understanding of basic principles of project management
Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
Experience with preparing Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) plans.
Transmission experience with design/construction of electric power substations.
Good written and oral communication skills.
Working Conditions
Mobility Classification – Hybrid with 2-3 days in the office.
Normal job functions are performed on a Monday through Friday schedule with some system travel required (approximately 25%)
Must be available for call-out and work during system emergencies.
Alternate work schedules, including ½ day Friday and Alternate Friday off, are available.
