DEPARTMENT: Histology JOB TITLE: Histotechnologist with Cytopreparation
REPORTS TO: AP Supervisor and/or Lab Manager
A Histotechnologist with Cytopreparation is responsible, but is not limited to the following duties:
Summary:
The Histotechnologist/Cytotechnologist supports the Laboratory’s surgical pathology service by preparing, processing and staining tissue for examination by the pathologist. Assures accurate and timely processing of specimens and applies theoretical concepts of histotechnology to daily activities using independent judgment. In the absence of the director, shall be responsible for the proper performance of all histology procedures.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Knowledgeable in the handling of specimens from grossing to final specimen storage.
2. Organizes and performs work according to section's procedure manual and collaborates with other personnel toward an efficient laboratory workflow.
3. Reports any problem or non-conformance to the supervisor if not a supervisor.
4. Monitors equipment temperature; correctly labels and stores all reagents; keeps working area, instruments and equipment maintenance and maintains appropriate records.
5. Ensures correct patient identification, case numbering, part types and fee codes.
6. Performs gross descriptions and enters them in the computer.
7. Set up and process GYN and Non-GYN specimens when help is needed.
8. Sets-ups and operates the tissue processor.
9. Embeds tissue in paraffin; is knowledgeable of embedding techniques and correct specimen orientation.
10. Sections paraffin blocks; produces sections of adequate thickness with minimal cutting artifact.
11. Stains, coverslips and labels slides.
12. Performs any on-site special stains and immunohistochemical stains according to procedure manual.
13. Maintains knowledge of procedural theory and utilizes it in troubleshooting staining problems.
14. Files slides and paraffin blocks.
15. Is knowledgeable of quality management/assurance and maintains Laboratory compliance with all regulatory permits, licenses and accreditations. Acts on deficiencies or refers them to the pathologist.
16. Has participated in CAP/NYS DOH inspections (preferable).
Position Requirements:
- Florida State License
- Minimum of 2 year of experience (processing and analysis)
- Working knowledge of computers (Word and Excel) and LIS
- Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English
- Excellent organizational skills
- Cooperative working relationship with peers and management; dependable, flexible and adaptable in all aspects of work
- Ability to operate staining, cover slipping and centrifuge equipment
- Ability to work with hazardous chemicals
- Ability to lift up to 30 lb.
Desired:
- ASCP certified or eligible
- Knowledge of medical terminology
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $30.00 - $35.00 per hour
Expected hours: 37.5 per week
