Reports to: Senior Leadership Team
Location: Remote, with possible future travel to partnerships (up to 10%)
Compensation: $85,000
About Brigaid: Founded by former Noma head chef Dan Giusti, Brigaid is a startup that began challenging the school food status quo by putting professional chefs into public schools to cook fresh, wholesome food from scratch. In 2016, we launched our first pilot program with the New London Public School district in New London, Connecticut. Since then, we’ve partnered with school districts around the country and expanded our reach into institutional kitchens of all kinds, equipping chefs to work within the parameters of federally-funded food assistance programs to provide organizations with practical solutions and hands-on training that facilitate improved outcomes for those they serve. We encourage you to learn more about our work by visiting our website, chefsbrigaid.com, and our Instagram, @brigaid.
About Position:
Over the past three years, the Brigaid team has grown exponentially–from five chefs in 2021 to almost 60 in 2024. As business–and our impact in the institutional food space–continues to grow, our team is in need of a detail-oriented, data-driven, and collaborative Senior Writer to develop all written materials across the organization. These written materials range from comprehensive, data-driven Program Assessment Reports, which mark the start of all new partnerships, to compelling requests for proposals/quotes (RFP/RFQ) responses, in-depth proposals for new business, and beyond. Altogether, the work of the Senior Writer will be instrumental to the next stage of growth for Brigaid.
The Senior Writer will work closely with our senior leadership team as well as Program Chefs, Chef Assessors, and Training Chefs operating around the country. Aside from creating deliverables for partner organizations and supporting the business development function, the Senior Writer will work with the leadership team to craft effective, powerful narratives that detail the depth and breadth of our impact.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate and execute the development, review, and submission of all Program Assessment materials in collaboration with the senior leadership team and Chef Assessors.
- A Program Assessment is the first engagement with most of our food service partner organizations. These projects begin with a team of our chefs (Chef Assessors) visiting all of the sites within the organization. The findings from these visits are compiled and presented to the partner organization through a series of deliverables, most notably the Program Assessment Report (a 20-35 page document outlining what was found during the site visits, what opportunities lie ahead, and recommendations for how to begin optimizing their program).
- In partnership with the leadership team and Chef Assessors, optimize the process for creating Program Assessment deliverables to ensure that our time and efforts are being invested in the best way possible to serve our partners.
- Create narrative opportunities to tell the story of Brigaid, our impact, and our vision for the future that resonate with their intended audiences.
- Ideate and develop metrics to track our success in this space. When these metrics uncover areas of untapped potential, work with the leadership team to determine if/how new opportunities for impact can be explored.
- Support Brigaid’s business development efforts by crafting compelling, effective proposals, responses to requests for proposals/quotes (RFPs/RFQs), etc.
- Systematize the process through which new business documents are created, prioritizing efficacy and efficiency.
- Leverage professional writing skills and any analytical background and/or public health experience to position Brigaid as a powerful change agent through narrative opportunities and data-driven writing.
- Hone the Brigaid voice and work with members of the leadership team to be sure the communication style and sound of Brigaid is cohesive across all business and partnership documents (Program Assessment Reports, presentations, proposals, etc.).
- Create the necessary infrastructure (operational processes, tools, etc.) to ensure that all submitted deliverables are created with the utmost care, timeliness, and attention to detail (spelling, grammar, conventions, etc.).
Qualifications:
- At least two years of professional writing experience, with a proven track record of success and attention to detail.
- Technical, data-driven writing skills that can clearly and simply digest and communicate complex topics and engage a variety of audiences.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
- Spirit of a team player. The work of the Senior Writer will be collaborative and serve many different parts of the organization. Creating strong working relationships with members of the team at all levels will be key.
- Approach of a self-starter. The work of the Senior Writer has previously been split across multiple Brigaid team members. Consolidating this work in this new role will require the Senior Writer to create the infrastructure and processes around their work.
- Passion for Brigaid’s mission and eagerness to learn more about the institutional food service space and how we work.
- Proficiency in word processing software, including Microsoft Office Suite and the Google Workspace suite of tools, as well as Zoom.
- Academic or professional experience in the public health space is a plus.
Supplementary Application Materials:
- Please submit two professional writing samples, preferably of distinct formats to showcase the range of your writing abilities.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to travel to partner sites across the country as needed/desired (up to 10%).
To Apply:
To be considered, please submit a resume and a cover letter. The first round of the hiring process will be a Zoom interview, after which qualified candidates will be invited to a second Zoom interview.
