The JCC of Central NJ is looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to serve as the Aquatics Director. The Aquatics Director is responsible for the management, development and oversight of the Aquatics department, including creating dynamic programs, managing the budget, supervising staff, and engaging with members and program participants. The position is a 40-hour/week, benefit-eligible, overtime exempt position and is supervised by the Associate Executive Director. Hours are flexible, though some weekday evening and weekend hours are required.
Key Responsibilities
General
- Oversee the management of the Aquatics department
- Develop and evaluate Aquatics operational procedures and policies and recommend changes, as necessary
- Develop and monitor the Aquatics budget; modify Aquatics department operations throughout fiscal year to stay within budget
- Attend scheduled staff and departmental meetings, agency staff training seminars and agency-wide special event programs
- Manage pool rentals to outside agencies from start to finish, including contracts, relationships, and post-rental follow-up
- Work with outside vendors to manage and maintain pool chemical supplies
- Evaluate and identify issues related to filtration equipment and air quality control
- Provide excellent customer service
- Promptly reply to phone calls and emails
- Address participant / parent concerns immediately and professionally
- Administer first aid/CPR AED if necessary
- Stay up to date on all required certifications for self and staff
- Proficient use of department and agency software
Year-Round Aquatics Programs
- Supervise, mentor, and motivate Aquatics staff including lifeguards, coaches, and WSIs
- Interview, hire and train staff
- Maintain records of staff certifications and trainings and ensure Aquatics staff certifications are up to date
- Work with Assistant Aquatics Director to set and manage staff schedules
- Manage and maintain a clean, safe, functional, and attractive Aquatics area
- Ensure highest level of Certified Pool Operator management
- Ensure proper sanitization protocols and daily cleaning schedules
- Manage supply ordering
- Develop and manage Aquatics department initiatives to enhance and increase member engagement and participation
- Provide technical expertise, instructor training, and direction
- Conduct quarterly in-service education for staff
- Collaborate agency-wide to create a healthy community among staff and members across multiple departments
- Evaluate and enhance current programming to offer best-in-class swim lessons (private, group, adaptive, etc.)
- Develop method of continuous swimmer progress reports; ensure continued updates are provided
- Work with Marketing department on an ongoing basis to inform community of upcoming programs
Seasonal Day Camp Programs
- Oversee management of swim programs for the JCC’s day camp, Camp Yachad
- Supervise, mentor, and motivate Aquatics staff including lifeguards, coaches, and WSIs
- Interview, hire, and train seasonal staff in partnership with Camp Leadership
- Attend Camp Leadership Team trainings throughout the year
- Oversee evaluation and placement of campers into appropriate swim levels
- Develop, maintain, and adjust camper swim schedule
- Manage distribution of periodic swim evaluation to camp families
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in physical education, recreation or related field is preferred or equivalent education and work experience in related field
- Minimum 2-3 years managerial experience in an Aquatics facility, JCC or recreational-based agency, including supervisory experience
- Required Aquatics certifications:
Lifeguard, WSI, and CPR/First Aid/AED
Angel Fish (or willingness to get certified within 3 months of hire)

Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 25 pounds
- Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time
- Move pool deck furniture as needed
