Tunnel Engineer
JW Fowler is a heavy civil contractor specializing in tunneling, deep sewer pipelines and water/wastewater treatment facilities for communities throughout the Western United States. Specific Responsibilities
This position will be responsible for assisting the Tunnel Division in the successful completion of tunnel projects located throughout the western United States. The following responsibilities are intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by employees assigned to this position. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of responsibilities, duties or skills required. Duties and responsibilities may be added or changed as deemed appropriate by management at any time.
- Eager to learn and grow; no tunnel experience required but tunnel experience sure to come!
- Desire to be a meaningful part of a technical construction team planning and constructing tunnels throughout the Western United States
- Planning – The Tunnel Engineer assists and leads the development of project related submittals pertaining to project specific equipment, materials, means and methods of construction.
- Coordination of Temporary Engineering designs with outside design firms which include but are not limited to Construction Devices, Support of Excavation, Crane Lifts etc.
- Coordination and compilation of all field deliverables including administrative cost controls, shift reports, tunneling machine data analysis and compilation, quality control documents and receiving of equipment and materials onsite.
- Slurry Separation Coordinator, monitoring and optimizing operation of slurry separation plants and various components with the superintendent and fore person.
- Direct interaction and assistance of field personnel constructing the work.
- Assist Foremen and Superintended with interpretation and understanding of Contract plans and specifications.
- Assist in preparation of negotiation of contracts and agreements with vendors, suppliers and subcontractors.
- Work closely with project Superintendent to ensure our tunnels are completed safely, on time and under budget.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Engineering Management, or related discipline; Field experience will be considered in lieu of formal technical degree. This position may advance to an assistant project manager or field superintendent withing 2-3 years with demonstrated performance and success.
- 0 to 2 years of relevant experience, internship experience highly desirable
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, we want our team to interact face to face with each other and our clients.
- Computer skills, including experience in MS Office Suite and some version of CAD 3D modeling.
- A team player who can effectively function with a diverse group of people to achieve a common goal.
Physical Demands
Ability to stand or walk for long periods; use arms and hands to reach for, handle and manipulate objects; lift and carry materials weighing up to 50 pounds. Climb up and down ladder, scaffolds, and other objects, and carry tools and equipment. Stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. Ability to see well and distinguish between back up alarms, voices, and other normal sounds consistent with construction job sites.
Environment Adaptability
Work inside and outside in all weather conditions and various locations. Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods of time. Hard hat, hearing and eye protection required when on job site.

Pay: $95,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
