We are seeking a motivated veterinary assistant or credentialed technician/nurse for our family-owned, general practice and internal medicine service who is eager to learn and employ their skills and knowledge to the practice of veterinary medicine. Located on East Broadway in Louisville, Blue Cross is a centrally located general practice and Internal Medicine referral hospital, staffed by credentialed technicians and a board-certified Internal Medicine specialist. Our hospital performs the following services:
-All things general practice, including digital radiology and surgery
-Echocardiography, Abdominal ultrasonography, Ultrasound guided organ biopsy , Small Parts Ultrasonography (thyroid, parathyroid), Gastroduodenoscopy, Colonoscopy, Cystoscopy, Bronchoscopy, Rhinoscopy, Video otoscopy, Thoracocentesis, Bone Marrow aspirate/biopsy, Abdominocentesis, Pericardiocentesis, Cancer Staging, Systemic chemotherapy, Transfusion medicine, Computed Tomography, Mobile abdominal ultrasonography and Mobile echocardiography
Summary of Job Purpose and Function
The veterinary technician/nurse (credentialed) assists the veterinarian with every aspect of patient and client care, from exams to procedures. Veterinary technicians will have the opportunity to perform all clinic tasks under the direction of the veterinarian except diagnosis, prescription and surgery.
Essential Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine
- Assist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs, and weights, as well as providing client education.
- Obtain blood, stool, and other samples; perform in-hospital laboratory testing and prepare specimens for outside laboratories.
- Calculate drug dosages and fluid rates
- Place IV catheters, e-collars, nasogastric/nasopharyngeal tubes and other procedures as assigned
- Take digital radiographs/CT/assist with ultrasound following proper safety procedures.
- Provide basic animal handling and restrain animals during exams.
- Prepare patients for surgery/dentals and other procedures; monitor vitals
- Recover patients from anesthetic procedures
- Fill medications
- Administer and monitor medications, anesthesia, vaccines, and treatments at the discretion of the veterinarian.
- Maintain exam rooms, treatment, and lab areas; restock exam rooms with supplies. Assist other team members to keep the public areas of the practice clean; clean and maintain all medical equipment according to schedule.
- Maintain accurate digital medical records
- Demonstrate warmth, courtesy and professionalism in all interactions with clients; exercise compassion and care in all interactions with patients.
- Communicate with veterinarians and practice team members including client discussions, patient plans, client concerns, etc.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements/Qualifications
- State license to work as a certified/licensed/registered veterinary technician in state of desired employment
- Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance
- Practice OSHA safety techniques including proper PPE
- Basic computer skills, familiarity with MS office applications, etc.
- Basic math and ability to calculate medication dosages
- Strong communication skills to ensure patient safety
