Summary: The Process Metallurgist is responsible to ensure North Star BlueScope Steel meets customer and industry specifications. Responsibilities may include developing and modifying steel grades for production, monitoring/modifying steelmaking processes for efficiency/cost savings and interacting with sales/customers to ensure that North Star BlueScope steel meets all customer requirements. They will provide technical leadership and process expertise to continuously improve safety, quality, yield and throughput in the plant. The team member will work with other departments to lead projects that implement new products, materials, equipment, and processes into operations to improve cost competitiveness, address non-conformances/customer corrective actions, and solve a broad range of operational issues.

Review steel making practices for efficiency and cost savings.

Develop alternative steel making strategies.

Review mill orders to meet customer specifications and purchase orders.

Assist in the development of customer and North Star BlueScope Steel specifications.

Development and maintenance of product data sheets to streamline sales inquiries.

Maintain material specifications, rolling codes, and North Star BlueScope Steel’s grade book.

Monitor processes to ensure adherence of North Star BlueScope products to industry and customer standards.

Define and document Standard Operating Procedures and modified processes.

Effectively communicate with customers, sales personnel, operations, and outside processors to result in positive customer relations to develop new products based on customer inquiries and mill capabilities.

Effectively communicate with all personnel within the plant while implementing managerial technology.

Manage communication of quality issues to the business/ coordinate teams to work on resolution.
- Manage and report on trials for product development.

Manage process data collection and analysis as part of project tracking and completion.

Display solid technical skills in developing new products/grades, improving current products to establish quality control practices, and performing metallurgical investigations.

Support laboratory investigations for claims and customer requested investigations and coordinate responses to customer corrective actions in a timely fashion.

Ensure adherence of all departmental personnel to safety and housekeeping practices.

Act as a technical resource for Technical Service Engineers and Inside/Outside Sales.

Provide technical support to operations by spending time on the floor learning processes, troubleshooting, and leading and/or participating on multiple process improvement teams.

Perform Root Cause Analysis of process-related defects and effects on final products.

Contribute to process improvements based on detailed analysis of quality parameters data and collaboration with outside technical resources and organizations.

Identify & work to remove barriers that slow or prevent successful attainment of process improvement project goals.

Lead/manage projects/teams to improve operations in the plant to drive continuous improvement of our quality-related metrics.
- Remain proactively involved in developing the operating parameters along with implementation of operational enhancements and improvement projects.

Interact with maintenance to implement process improvements and efficiencies to meet overall production needs.

Represent North Star BlueScope Steel during customer visits and audits.

Bachelor’s Degree in Metallurgy/Materials Engineering or another technical field.

Proven track record of leading safety, quality, and process improvement teams within a manufacturing environment.

Self-starter with exceptional data analysis skills.

Strong Root Cause Analysis and Failure Analysis.

Ability to work with individuals at all levels of the organization and utilize the internal knowledge base to solve technical problems.

Demonstrated success in problem-solving and the ability to influence and motivate others.

Experience in articulating and presenting analytical findings to audiences with different levels of technical expertise.

Working knowledge of steel products and steel manufacturing process.

Proven decision-making skills which include strong quantitative and analytical skills, strong statistical, mathematical background, and computer literacy.

Knowledge and experience with lean manufacturing methodologies and problem-solving techniques.

Proficient in the advanced features of Microsoft Office products: Word and Excel.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Ability to work independently.

Leadership experience in working with and leading cross functional teams.

Flat rolled steel industry experience.

Knowledge of documented quality systems and experience with conducting internal audits as lead or second auditor to determine compliance for ISO Standards.
