Job Summary:
The Tax Associate, Tax Automation & Innovation, as a member of the Tax Automation & Innovation team, applies their educational background and organizational skills while taking direction from others in order to collaborate with clients of the firm and team members to implement tax automation tools.
The Tax Associate, Tax Automation & Innovation is responsible for collaborating with Tax AI leadership to assess client tax departments end-to-end and deliver on the areas determined to be in need of automation across tax data, process, technology and workforce. Client engagements may include optimization or implementation of existing client tools, custom BDO tax/data solutions or 3 rd party vendor solutions. The Tax Associate, Tax Automation & Innovation is charged with participating in engagements under the direction of Tax AI leadership including exposure to the scoping phase as well as design, build, test and deployment stages. The Tax Associate, Tax Automation & Innovation may also assist in developing training and documentation during the final client hand-off stage. Duties often include participating in ongoing maintenance and consulting as well as providing support to clients’ post-implementation, such as on-site or virtual “go-live” or close assistance within new systems. It is possible that there will be some form of attendance and participation in various outside networking opportunities throughout the U.S., Other responsibilities may include collaborating with multiple other offices within the firm to assist other business line engagement teams in delivering tax solutions to their clients as well as supporting the firm through development of new internal tax solutions or consulting and training on existing internal tax processes, technologies and applications.
Job Duties:
- Tax Consulting
- Develops business domain expertise and understanding of inner workings of business functions to assist in designing customized technology and business solutions
- Seeks to learn the full picture of an external client or internal teams’ tax automation needs and assists in developing unique strategies aligned with tax automation objectives
- May participate in internal and external executive level meetings, that may include proposal delivery and solutions workshops
- Develops an understanding of work plans for tax consulting projects performed for one's clients
- Assists in gathering client data relevant to engagement design requirements whether for internal or client projects
- Seeks opportunities to understand the process of building solutions and delivering automated processes and tools to internal and/or client stakeholders
- Seeks opportunities to establish streamlined internal standards and processes for the practice
- Seeks to understand complex technical items and communicate them to target audience so that relevant issues are clearly understood
- Comprehends client challenges and works together with Tax AI engagement team members to assist with offering a solution to solve these challenges after thorough evaluation and comprehension of multiple potential approaches or technologies
- Engagement/Project Management
- Demonstrates basic project and process management skills; can effectively manage responsibilities associated with multiple large scale, complex projects at once as directed by Tax AI leadership
- Gains exposure determining the appropriate work plan for a given client or internal team working with Tax AI leadership
- Takes ownership of risk mitigation and quality assurance, with support from leadership with a focus on productivity and efficiency
- Develops understanding of proper scoping and works with Tax Automation & Innovation team as appropriate to ensure client engagement terms are followed
- Delivers project on time and within budget by utilizing project management and client service skills
- Collaborates with internal teams and client to understand the big picture when developing and implementing projects
- Communicates with internal teams and clients to gather pertinent information when applicable
- Gains knowledge of the process of constructing comprehensive quantitative and qualitative business case for client to justify the investment and commitment of management time coupled with financial and human resources
- Client Service
- Clearly identifies internal teams’ and client expectations at the beginning of a project or engagement
- Communicates status to the internal team or client in line with the frequency agreed upon
- Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Works with local office personnel to direct the completion of projects
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Statistics, Economics, Computer Science or Technology, required
Experience:
- Internship within a professional services firm, preferred
- Experience with technology or tax systems, preferred
License/Certifications:
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) (or the equivalent of one of these designations), preferred
- Alteryx, RPA or other Analytics software certification, preferred
Experience with one or ideally multiple of the below software/tools preferred:
- Systems such as Oracle, Thomson Reuters, ONESOURCE, Longview, Corptax or GoSystems
- RPA tools ((UiPath, Blue Prism, PowerAutomate, Automation Anywhere, WinAutomation, etc.)
- ETL tools (Alteryx, Power Query, Power Pivot, Tableau Prep, etc.)
- Visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, Qlik, etc.)
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel, required; Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, preferred
Language:

- Strong people skills, including training/instruction with professionals at all levels
- Confidence and interest in demonstrating client relationship-building skills
- Demonstrated sound decision-making skills

- A basic understanding of tax accounting concepts in accordance with ASC 740
- A basic knowledge and skill level in project management
- Ability to complete projects independently, escalating roadblocks appropriately and timely
- Ability to travel at least 10% of the time
