Job Title: RN-Charge Nurse
Department: Nursing Services Reports to: Director of Nursing FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Summary: The primary purpose of your job position is to promote the physical and mental health of residents by applying the nursing processes of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation; and effectively interact with patient, significant others, and other health team members while maintaining standards of professional nursing. The nurse coordinates and monitors medical services, including psychiatric and medication services, in accord with the requirements of regulator .agencies and in response to individual resident need. The nurse is further responsible to provide direct nursing care to the residents, and to supervise the day-to-day nursing activities performed by nursing assistants.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Must possess a current, unencumbered, active license to practice as an RN in this state
- Must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age-related needs of the resident
- Participates in the admission of a new resident by clarifying initial or hospital discharge medication orders and contacts the Psychiatrist to review the resident's status and medication plan
- Develops plan to ensure that the medical and health care needs of resident's are met. Including:
- Coordinating the Annual Physical Examination
- Ensuring appropriate medical follow-up
- Providing special instructions to resident and home staff related to medical diagnosis, allergies, medication, diet, special emergency plans related to ongoing medical conditions
- Coordinating and reviewing lab work
- Coordinating care with clinics, outside physiciansand hospitals
- Health teaching
- Must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action and to remain calm during emergency situations
- Functions as part of an interdisciplinary team attending medication rounds and team meetings for Individual Plan of Service, (IPS), and quarterly review by completing the medical section of the IPS that address health and illness needs and issues
- Must possess the ability to deal tactfully with personnel, residents, family members, visitors, government agencies / personnel and the general public
- Must be a supportive team member, contribute to and be an example of team work and teamconcept * Must be able to follow oral and written instructions

- Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to nursing care facilities
- Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with and supervise other personnel
- Participates in the training and orientation of new staff, facility training activities, and community and other public education regarding mission and philosophy
- Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc. that are necessary for providing quality care
- Must possess the ability to display patience, tact, cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as be willing to handle residents based on whatever maturity level they are currently functioning
- Must possess the ability to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices
- Must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace
- Must be able to complete all other tasks as assigned by facility Administrator, Director of Nursing, or designee
- Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand the English Language
Qualifications: Previous experience in a patient care setting, knowledgeable regarding the nursing process and its application, including the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of nursing care. Two (2) years experience working as a Registered Nurse.
Education and / or Experiences: Must possess, as a minimum, a nursing degree from an accredited school of nursing, and have valid registration as a registered nurse in this state.
Working Conditions:
- Works in office areas as well as throughout the facility, and in resident rooms
- Moves intermittently during working hours
- Is subject to frequent interruptions
- Is involved with residents, personnel, visitors, government agencies / personnel, etc., under all conditions and circumstances
- Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, etc.
- Communications with the medical staff, nursing services, and other department directors
- Attends and participates in continuing education programs
- Works beyond normal duty hours, on weekends and holidays, and in other positions temporarily, when necessary
- Is subject to call back during emergency conditions (severe weather, evacuation, post-disaster, etc.)
- Is subject to injury from falls, burns from equipment, odors, etc., throughout the workday, as well as reactions from dust, disinfectants, tobacco smoke, and other air contaminates
- Is subject to exposure to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses
- May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals Physical & Sensory Requirements:

- Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday
- Must be able to speak and write the English Language in an understandable manner
- Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position
- Must possess sight/hearing senses or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met
- Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies
- Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which include a medical and physical examination
- Must be able to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at time hostile people in the facility
- Must be able to push, pullonove and / or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move and / or carry such weight a. minimum distance of 50 feet
- May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations
This position is being offered with the probationary period beginning on the first day of employment, and is subject to a ninety (90) day evaluation for continued employment.
