Sylvan, Inc. is a market-leading, trusted automotive services contractor to Fortune 500 companies.
The Structural Engineer will be responsible for design & detailing of structural support systems for automotive conveyor layouts. The Structural Engineer will work with the Mechanical Project Engineer and Project Manager to estimate structural steel quantities for new bids, design structural supports (header steel and screen guard) for current projects and detail / supervise detailing of structural steel drawings for fabrication. The Structural Engineer will work with the field engineer and site superintendent to ensure all customer and field requirements are met. This position will be responsible for structural steel quantity estimates for bids, the structural engineering design, layout, and detailing requirements for projects per the customer scope of work and Sylvan clarifications as indicated in the bid submittal.
Job Responsibilities

· Be able to support all structural calculations, including kip loadings, column sizing, cover plate sizing, beam sizing and base plate sizing and select the correct structural members.
· Work with the P.E. for state certified drawings of all structural and civil drawings.
· Be able to generate basic bid level structural sketches and estimate total steel quantities for new bid quotes.
· Must be able work with the project team to create a working solution to technical issues in a timely manner.
· Be able to check drawings from other team members before sending to the shop or sub-fabrication source.
· Work with the project manager on-site as required.
· Be able to visit jobsites for meetings and field checks as requested.
· Assist the project manager with tasks as required.
· Maintain knowledge of the latest revisions of Customer specifications.
· Be able to work with and train engineers with less experience.
· Be able to work with and monitor engineering sub-contractor selected for the project.
Education Requirements
· Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and/or 5 years automotive conveyor structural support design experience.
· Professional Engineer License for the State of Michigan preferred but not required.
Experience
· 5+ years of experience with designing structural support steel for automotive conveyor systems.
· Experience with structural calculations, member sizing, and stress analysis.
· Experience with structural connection types.
· Experience working both independently and in a team environment.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
· Strong interpersonal skills with a professional, positive “can-do” attitude.
· Possess excellent communication skills.
· Proficient in Microsoft Word & Excel; create clearly written notifications and RFI's.
· Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment and in a timely manner per the project schedule.
· Able to identify scope of work changes and create detailed change order requests.
