If you love designing and creating beautiful and unique pieces of furniture, working with your hands and top-of-the-line equipment, and solving unique problems, this will be an enjoyable job for you. The ideal candidate would have prior experience working in a woodshop and building furniture or experience with multiple hobbyist furniture projects of their own.
Job Description
An experienced Furniture Maker is needed to help with custom furniture production. From design to execution, we’re seeking someone who is capable of working independently with a high attention to detail to create high quality products to our client’s specifications. The ideal candidate will have worked with a wide variety of woodworking tools and understand how to use them properly and safely.
This position may interact directly with customers; acting as a consultant to help them to design the perfect piece. They also may oversee the work of a woodshop assistant to help them on various projects. We look for a good work ethic, a good attitude, and the ability to problem solve with the end goal and customer satisfaction in mind. Some portion of the work is done in shop areas without air conditioning, and you should expect to be on your feet most of the day.
Job duties include:
- Consultation and design of furniture for clients
- Creative problem solving.
- Ability to build furniture from start to finish in an efficient and safe manner while minimizing mistakes.
- Determining the appropriate order of operations for consistent, efficient, and accurate outcomes.
- Use of common & specialty woodworking tools & saws: jointer, planer, table saw, sliding table saw, band saw, wide belt sander, orbital sander, chisels, hand planes, surfacing machine, moulder, straight line rip saw, double planer, and dust collection systems.
- Experience with epoxy is a plus but not a significant focus.
- Accurate measurements and use of basic and intermediate math and geometry
- Familiar with using oil finishes.
- Maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
- Coaching or directing work of woodshop assistants
Qualifications:
- Prior furniture making experience required, seasoned hobbyists considered.
- Knowledge of joinery techniques and ability to identify various wood species.
- Ability to recognize problems or concerns and to effectively communicate them in a timely manner
- Self-motivated, ability to follow instructions, think ahead, and work well with others.
- Focus on quality, productivity, and safety while having a high attention to detail
- Excellent attendance, work ethic, integrity, and use of good judgement.
- Ability to professionally interact with customers.
- Ability to work alone and as a team.
- Physical Requirements: Walking, Standing, Sitting, Climbing, Bending, and Lifting in excess of 50 lbs.
- High School diploma/equivalent preferred
- Valid Texas Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
- Must speak and understand English/Hablas & comprendes ingles
Hours / Pay / Benefits:
- Hours are generally 8 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday
- Full Time: $17-25/hr starting pay, depending on experience
- Helmwood does not currently provide healthcare benefits, however we do provide $175/month reimbursement towards your own healthcare marketplace enrollment.
