Position Title: Optometry Assistant

Position Summary:
Responsible for conducting pre-testing before general eye exams and operation of the following ophthalmic equipment’s:
- Pre-testing I – auto refraction, lensometry, tonometry and other test.
- Pre-testing II – preliminary case history including ocular history, family history and current medical conditions. Visual acuities, dial in phoropter, color vision and dilation drop instillation.
- Special testing – visual fields, fundus photography.
Responsibilities:
- Processing patient’s information through EPIC, collection of fees, and helps maintain the operation of the reception records and examination room area.
- Checking in and checking out of patients.
- Processes patient’s information through EPIC, the EMR system, and helps maintain the operation of the reception records and examination room area.
- Retrieves and prepare patient records from EPIC to ensure complete information on file before appointment date, and for preparation of eye exam.
- Manages continuous patient flow by effectively communicating with team members and providers.
- Work with case managers to prepare referrals, work and/or school excuse letters, written prescriptions for providers to sign and staff consult letters to primary care provider.
- Conducts inventory of supplies at the examination room. Verifies and maintains stock level and recommends disposal for all expired supply items.
- Conducts inventory of frames at the optical room. Verifies and maintains stock level and reorder frames as needed.
- Disinfects and wipes down all equipment and instruments.
- Conducts pre-testing and special testing for the following equipment and instruments:
- 1. Pre-testing I – auto refraction, lensometry, tonometry and other test.
- 2. Pre-testing II – preliminary case history including ocular history, family history and current medical conditions. Visual acuities, dial in phoropter, color vision and dilation drop instillation
- 3. Special testing – visual fields, fundus photography.
- Performs dilation and photography for retinal scan screening.
- Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- High School Graduate – certification required
- Experience with impressive track record in conducting pre-testing and special testing for the following equipment and instruments
- Pre-testing I – auto refraction, lensometry, tonometry and topography.
- Pre-testing II – preliminary case history including current medical conditions. Visual acuities, dial in, phoropter, color vision and drop instillation.
- Special testing – visual fields, fundus photography, slit lamp photography, optic vision screener.
- Effective team player. With very good interpersonal relationship skills and can work and relate well with co-employees, patients and customers.
- Must have the behavioral sensitivity, maturity, diplomacy and tact in addressing complex situations and handling irate customers.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, in both English and Spanish.
- Strong ethics and a high level of personal and professional integrity.
- Must have basic familiarity on federal and state laws and requirements relating to healthcare management.
- Computer literate and very highly proficient in using MS office and electronic medical record programs.
