Position Description:
As a summer camp Food Service Assistant at South Side Mission Camp Kearney, you play a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of our camp's kitchen and dining facilities. Your responsibilities include assisting the camp cook with food preparation, meal service, kitchen cleaning, and inventory management. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to support counselors with campers and participate in program activities and chapel times, all while contributing to the mission of South Side Mission Camp Kearney of teaching campers about Jesus Christ. This is a seasonal summer position and requires spending overnights at camp for the weeks it is in session.
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent experience
Bonafide Occupational Qualifications:
Must be of Christian Faith.
Tasks:
Safety and Supervision:
- Enforce safety protocols to maintain a safe environment for staff and campers.
- Prioritize the safety and well-being of staff and campers, maintaining vigilance and prompt action in response to any safety concerns.
- Coordinate and implement program components relative to the daily schedule in a timely manner.
Weekly Responsibilities:
Food Preparation Support:
- Assist kitchen staff with food preparation tasks, following recipes and instructions provided.
- Help set up and organize food stations, ensuring efficient meal preparation and service.
Meal Service Assistance:
- Serve meals to campers, staff, and visitors, ensuring portion control and adherence to dietary restrictions.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of dining areas during mealtimes, including clearing tables and replenishing supplies.
Kitchen Cleaning and Organization:
- Clean and sanitize kitchen surfaces, equipment, and utensils.
- Wash dishes, pots, pans, and utensils promptly and efficiently.
- Keep kitchen floors, walls, and storage areas clean and free from debris.
Inventory and Stock Management:
- Assist in receiving, unpacking, and storing food and supplies.
- Monitor inventory levels and report shortages or restocking needs to the supervisor.
Adherence to Health and Safety Regulations:
- Follow food safety and sanitation practices to ensure compliance with health regulations.
- Report any safety hazards, accidents, or equipment malfunctions to the supervisor immediately.
General Responsibilities:
- Attend and actively participate in all camp programs and spiritual activities, contributing to the overall camp community.
- Maintain personal grooming and cleanliness standards, setting a positive example for campers and colleagues.
- Assist with camp clean-up at the end of each session and the conclusion of the summer, promoting teamwork and responsibility.
- Prepare and deliver a Camp Kitchen Assistant camp brief at the end of the summer.
- Support other camp duties as needed and assigned, demonstrating a willingness to contribute to the success of the camp community.
Qualifications:
- Active Food Handlers card for Illinois.
- Proven experience as a cook, preferably in a camp or similar setting.
- Ability to manage a high-volume kitchen and efficiently plan and prepare meals for large groups.
- Familiarity with dietary restrictions, food allergies, and special dietary needs.
- Strong organizational skills, including inventory management and record-keeping.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with campers, staff, and team members.
- Knowledge of food safety and sanitation guidelines.
- Ability to adapt and be flexible in a camp environment with limited resources.
Physical and Other Requirements:
- Ability to sit, walk, stand, bend, squat, climb, kneel, and twist on an intermittent or continuous basis.
- Ability to grasp, push, pull objects and reach overhead.
- Ability to operate telephone and desktop or laptop computer.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to access and produce information from a computer.
- Ability to understand written information.
