JOB TITLE: Bus Driver
CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt
DEPARTMENT: Transportation
SUPERVISOR: Transportation Coordinator
EMPLOYMENT TERM: 175 Day
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Transportation Coordinator, provides bus transportation services for students and SFIS employees to and from school and other sites within designated route(s) and ensures transportation system and passenger safety. Responsible for the safe operation of a school bus while meeting established bus schedules. Monitors equipment and performs inspections and limited maintenance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Follow assigned routes and adhere to established schedules.
- Drive bus to and from Santa Fe Indian School.
- Conduct safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily. (pre/post trip).
- Reports all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, mechanical failure, and completes required reports as well as reports for needed mechanical repairs when necessary.
- Keep records on bus mileage, gas and oil consumption, and passengers transported.
- Keep assigned bus clean, services bus with fuel and oil, checks tires and batteries.
Additional Essential Duties/Responsibilities and Expectations:
- Supervise students as they board, are on board and leave bus accordingly.
- Communicate effectively with students, teachers and/or parents, when needed.
- Transports students and teachers on field trips to various locations; planning necessary route(s) and stops as needed.
- Maintain order and proper discipline of student behavior according to SR & R policies.
- Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations, evacuation drills, emergency bus evacuation training, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Ability to complete required bus driver safety training
- Ability to maintain equipment, tools, and bus area in an operable, safe, and orderly status.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Ability to remain calm, flexible, and work effectively under pressure.
- Ability to use good judgement, analyze and solve problems.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to represent SFIS in a professional manner, building respect and confidence.
- Ability to maintain professional relationships and to work effectively with a wide range of people in a diverse community.
- Ability to manage student behavior
- Records maintenance skills.
- Ability to understand and follow safety procedures.
- Knowledge of basic vehicle inspection and maintenance including tire pressure, checking oil and water levels.
- Ability to safely and efficiently operate a loaded passenger bus.
- Ability to operate bus in a safe manner
- Knowledge of student discipline procedures
Minimum Qualifications:
- HS Diploma or equivalent
- Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with P & S Endorsements
- Two years of experience in performing bus transportation, preferably in a school setting
- Must complete and successfully pass a complete background investigation, including FBI fingerprint check.
- As a CDL driver, the employee will be required to comply with all provisions of DOT Regulation 49 CFR Parts 40 and 382, including random drug and alcohol testing.
Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee regularly is required to stand/walk; sit for long periods of time, have manual and finger dexterity; stoop; and kneel. Occasionally required to reach above shoulder level, repetitive hand, and arm motions; crouch, balance, push/pull and carry. Must be able to see, read and record small numbers. Must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 lbs.
Safety and Health Requirements:
- Inspect bus by checking fuel, oil, water, tires, lights, brakes, and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment, such as a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, flags, fuses, crowbar, and reflectors.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisor of any conditions that are not immediately correctable.
- Report any hazardous conditions along schedule routes.
- Complete all required training.
- Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.

- Safety Equipment (flares, reflective signs, etc.), fire extinguisher, first aid kit
Work Environment:
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with high to moderate noise levels. May be exposed to inclement weather and moderate exposure to vehicle fumes. Evening, holiday, and weekend work may be required.
Conditions:
Any employee may be required to stay at or return to work during incidents and/or emergencies to perform duties specific to this classification or to perform other duties as requested in an assigned response position. This may require working a non-traditional work schedule or working outside normal assigned duties during the incident and/or emergency.
