Overview:
Registered nurses provide illness management and health promotion for patients and families who require care. Registered staff nurses utilize the nursing process and knowledge of scientific principles to provide safe, high quality, comprehensive, and age appropriate nursing care for their assigned patients. Registered staff nurses provide patient and family education and advocate for their needs. Registered nurses coordinate patient care with nonprofessional personnel as necessary.
Patient care services are provided to children ranging from infants to adolescents with general pediatric illnesses, post-surgical procedures (requiring short-term, acute care), GI motility studies and acute GI infections. Children's Mercy Kansas is the designated location for admission of patients with eating disorders. In addition, there are eight epilepsy monitoring beds on the unit. These neurology patients are admitted for a 1–5-day study to classify their seizure types and adjust their therapy.
The criteria used to discern an appropriate admission to the Inpatient Unit of Children's Mercy Kansas involves the severity of illness and level of services needed to provide the highest level of safe, specialized pediatric care. Patients requiring intensive services, critical observation, and specialized services not available at the Kansas location are referred to the Children's Mercy Hospital Adele Hall Campus for the continuation of their care.
