Xavier University’s Division of Student Affairs is seeking applications for the Assistant Vice President (AVP) and Dean of Students to lead departments and programmatic efforts that will enhance the student experience through care, support and advocacy. Reporting to the Vice President (VP) for Student Affairs, the AVP and Dean of Students, through a student success lens and framework, assesses and produces comprehensive response services for all students, assists with serving the urgent needs of students, families and the campus community, and promotes a vibrant and inclusive student experience that is conducive to learning, growth, and development. The role will direct all aspects of student care, conduct, crisis management, and student success within the Student Affairs portfolio while incorporating the Catholic, Jesuit mission of the institution.
RESPONSIBILITIES – Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Vision and Strategic Planning
Provides strategic leadership, planning, oversight of all student success initiatives within the Division of Student Affairs. Fosters partnerships and collaboration for the development and implementation of high-quality and student-centered approaches to support student success and initiatives with leaders across the University to advance care, support, and operation efficiencies. Anticipates changing needs and expectations of today’s college students and leads cross-functional education and awareness opportunities to continually enhance the comprehensive Xavier student experience.
- Leadership and Supervision
Supervise professional staff and provide overall direction to the Office of the Dean of Students, Care Management Services and Office of Student Integrity to effectively provide vital student support and student success services to the community. Serve as a strategic partner for the VP for Student Affairs, as a member of the Campus Emergency Response Team, and serve on the Student Affairs Leadership Team and the Xavier University Council. Provide oversight and direction to the student conduct process including; serving as the appellate layer, education University constituents on conduct processes; monitoring cases with significant allegations; ensure the maintenance of records and statistics to the highest industry standards, and coordinating proactive divisional initiatives intended to further a climate of civility and respect on campus. Oversee the work of the Xavier Action and Care Team (XACT) to include, coordinating resource and support delivery to students in crisis; providing education and training to University constituents regarding students of concern; maintain data and statistics regarding student needs; develop policies and systems to promote student safety in compliance with regulatory guidelines. Coordinate and provide proactive outreach and responsive one-on-one communication with students and parents/families who are dealing with challenges or concerns. Serve as the primary point of contact for faculty and staff who refer students for assistance and support. Work closely with staff and faculty to identify and resolve student issues and concerns, to mediate and resolve conflict or points of tension that hinder students’ successful progress, and to respond to student referrals for assistance, as needed.
- Operations and Business Management
Provide leadership in long-term budget and revenue forecasting as well as manage oversight of all budgets allocated to Student AVP and Dean of Students units. Evaluate and implement systems that achieve fiscal responsibility and quality care in the context of student success (Retention, Persistence, and Graduation). Maintain a secure system of confidential records in accordance with applicable standards of practice, state and federal laws. Ensure compliance with University policies, state and federal laws related to student behaviors as well as adherence to professional and ethical guidelines. Conduct evidence-based assessment of student learning outcomes and student success metrics.
- Education and Programming
Regularly attend and support student functions and events. Co-lead the Student Affairs Advisory Board with VP of Student Affairs. Lead trainings and cross-functional department meetings to communicate the dynamic and evolving needs of students and their families to ensure innovative student success-oriented programs and services are offered through a holistic student experience.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master’s degree required; Doctoral degree preferred.
- 5-10 year of relevant experience.
- A successful candidate must possess extensive knowledge of student success, crisis management, behavioral response, relevant laws and university policies and procedures.
- Strong theoretical and philosophical foundation in student affairs/development.
- Effective in interpersonal communications, problem solving, relationship cultivation, and public speaking.
