The D. R. Evarts Library is looking to hire a part-time (5-15 hours a week) Library Clerk. This position requires a friendly, positive, and energetic personality coupled with creative and innovative thinking. As a smaller community library, it is necessary that each staff member be willing to work as a team and perform multiple tasks with ease.
This is a Non-Competitive Civil Service Appointment. Position details as follows:
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This work involves performing routine library clerical duties necessary for properly organizing and circulating library materials. No prior knowledge of library procedures is required; on-the-job training is provided. Work is performed under the direct supervision of higher-level clerks or Librarians. May supervise pages and volunteers. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (The typical work activities listed below are illustrative only. Incumbents inthis title may perform some or all of the following, as well as other related activities not described).
- Arranges or files materials according to library filing rules;
- Performs routine searches of and updates to computer records;
-Registers patrons and issues borrowers’ cards according to library procedures;
-Registers and assists patrons with public access computers, fax, and copy machines;
-Assists patrons in locating library materials;
-Performs routine circulation, reserve, and overdue functions, including the collection of library fines and fees;
- Makes and checks routine arithmetic computations;
- Operates a computer, tablet, and/or cell phone, uses a wide variety of library software and demonstrates to patrons how to use a computer, tablet, and cell phone.
- Operates office machinery such as photocopiers, fax machines, or computers;
- Answers the telephone and takes messages;
- Calls patrons to deliver messages or information on library materials;
- Types or data enters cards, lists, labels, or short entries on forms;
- Performs or assists in opening and closing the library according to established library policy;
-Ability to use a register to record sales or collection of fees.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
Good knowledge of Apple, Microsoft, and Google operating systems; Good knowledge of computers, tablets, and phones running Apple, Microsoft, Windows or Google software; Working knowledge of office terminology, procedures, and equipment as applied to library clerical work; Working knowledge of business arithmetic; Working knowledge of library filing and shelving rules; Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; Ability to operate an alphanumeric keyboard such as a typewriter, terminal, or computer accurately—skilled typing is not necessary; Tact and courtesy in dealing with coworkers and the public.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma.
