Staff accountant in hospitality plays a crucial role in maintaining the financial health and integrity of the organization, supporting operational decision-making, and ensuring compliance with industry-specific regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Reporting: Prepare and analyze financial statements such as balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements.
Budgeting and Forecasting: Assist in preparing budgets and financial forecasts for the hospitality establishment. This involves analyzing past financial performance and predicting future trends.
Accounts Payable and Receivable: Manage accounts payable by processing invoices, ensuring timely payments to vendors, and reconciling accounts. Handle accounts receivable by generating invoices, tracking payments, and following up on overdue accounts.
- Payroll Processing: Ensure accurate and timely processing of payroll for hospitality staff, including calculating wages, deductions, and ensuring compliance with payroll regulations.
- Inventory Control: Monitor and reconcile inventory levels, ensuring accurate recording of purchases, usage, and adjustments. This is particularly important in hospitality where inventory can include food, beverages, linens, and other supplies.
- Assist in preparing tax returns and ensuring compliance with all tax regulations relevant to the hospitality industry, including sales tax, occupancy tax, and payroll taxes.
- Conduct financial analysis to support decision-making, such as profitability analysis of different services or venues within the hospitality establishment.
- Implement and monitor internal controls to safeguard assets, ensure accuracy of financial data, and comply with company policies and regulations.
- Assist during internal and external audits by providing necessary documentation, explanations, and reconciliations.
- Utilize accounting software and systems to record transactions, maintain financial records, and generate reports. Familiarity with industry-specific software like property management systems (PMS) may be required.
- Work with management to control costs and improve efficiency in operations, which can involve analyzing cost variances and identifying areas for savings.
- Help develop and maintain financial policies and procedures specific to the hospitality industry, ensuring adherence throughout the organization.
- Stay informed about changes in accounting standards and regulations affecting the hospitality industry, and ensure compliance.
Requirements:
- A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is usually required. Some employers may prefer candidates with a master's degree in accounting or finance, especially for senior positions.
- Proficiency in accounting software and financial systems is essential. Knowledge of industry-specific software such as property management systems (PMS) or point of sale (POS) systems may be required depending on the role.
