Houston Gateway Academy, Inc(HGA). is a charter school located on 45 south and Woodridge Dr. about 7 minutes away from Downtown Houston. We currently serve about 2,000 scholars in grades PK-3 through 12th grade. Most of our students, if not all, are first generation. PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The School Nurse is responsible for implementing the District school health program and providing direct services to meet the health and safety needs of the students and staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Registered Nurse (RN) with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing
- Currently License as a Registered Nurse in the State of Texas
- AED / CPR certification and CPR trainer certification
- Hearing, vision, spinal, and TRAT2DC screener certifications (Must be able to obtain and maintain certifications)

Preferred:
Two years’ plus experience in community health, pediatric nursing or nursing which includes contact with school-age children.
Bilingual (Spanish/English) Preferred
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
Practical working knowledge of nursing procedures and techniques, preferably in the pediatric setting.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Complies with District policies, rules, and regulations.
- Demonstrates a positive and helpful approach in dealing with students, parents, and staff.
- Demonstrates good communication skills with parents and staff through written and oral interactions.
- Maintains accurate written and computerized records as required.
- Demonstrates proficient computer skills as well as filing skills.
- Skillfully operates health-related equipment such as blood pressure monitors/cuff, otoscope, audiometer, thermometer, vision and hearing screening equipment, basic clinic equipment, etc.
- Provides for daily care of students with medical needs in the school setting utilizing health protocols and care plans. Provide basic first aid care for minor injuries and illnesses and obtain necessary assistance in cases of serious trauma and /or illness.
- Accurately administers medications (as ordered by a physician) according to state law and District policy, and recognize adverse reactions.
- Maintains accurate, current, complete health records on each student, including individual daily documentation of student care, medications administered, treatments administered, immunization records, health history, screening results, and follow-up information.
- Performs screening procedures as required by Texas law, Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Education Agency, and District policy.
- Communicates daily with essential staff of any possible communicable diseases, any changes in students’ health status, and any family needs or concerns.
- Demonstrates knowledge regarding reporting abuse to the appropriate agency according to state laws and District policy.
- Models behavior that is ethical and responsible.
- Reports potential health and safety hazards to campus principal or campus safety officer.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned.
