Brightworks Sustainability’s Building Materials Practice covers all aspects of materials in the built environment. This includes optimizing material choices to reduce exposure to chemicals of concern, to reduce impacts from embodied carbon, to optimize for a circular economy, and beyond.
Brightworks Sustainability is seeking an experienced, qualified Sustainable Building Materials Specialist to join our team. The Materials Specialist role will involve directly leading and working on client projects at the building and portfolio scale, with a focus on shaping, performing, interpreting, and communicating sustainable materials analyses, guiding specifications and procurement conversations, and implementing sustainable procurement programs for our clients. The Materials Specialist position also performs research, analysis, client education, and coordination for our Healthy & Sustainable Materials service area. The position will have a strong emphasis on developing strategies for and implementing programs to reduce toxic chemicals in the built environment through material selection.
The role will involve working both on client projects and internal program development. The employee filling this position will work directly with client project teams and internal teams. This position reports to a Brightworks Service Lead and will work closely with Brightworks Senior team members and fellow Materials Specialists to develop tools and manage projects.
Required Qualifications
5+ years of experience in a complementary field or sustainability project management including at least 3 years of experience in technical materials related work (one or more of healthy + sustainable materials, sustainability specifications, product certifications, green building certifications)
Understands buildings, the design process, and the construction process and can interpret design drawings, specifications, and submittals
Experience managing project scopes, budgets, leading client meetings, overseeing analysis, and developing deliverables
Strong communication skills, i.e. presentations, graphics, reports, etc. (Adobe Creative Suite)
Undergraduate degree in field of study related to green building (engineering, architecture, construction management, sustainability, environmental science, etc.).
Preferred qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in sustainable materials advising and leadership in working with clients to drive sustainable material selections
Experience with Airtable, Smartsheet, and/or Google Sites
Understands materials-related requirements within LEED, ILFI, and/or WELL programs
Fluency with data management and advanced proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, advanced formulas)
Experience with EC3 tool (embodied carbon in construction calculator)
Understands LCA methodology and best practices, as well as WBLCA requirements for LEED and ILFI certification
Experience with One Click LCA and/or Tally LCA software
Specialty professional knowledge in one area of embodied carbon (MEP systems, façade design, structures, forestry, etc.)
Advanced degree in green building or sustainability related field
Location:
The preferred location for this position is Brightworks’ New York City office (hybrid schedule available). Alternatively, this may be a remote (work-from-home) position in the Boston, MA area.
Other Brightworks locations may be considered. East Coast work hours are required.
Salary and Benefits
The annual salary range for this position in New York City is $92,500 - $112,500. Starting pay offered may vary depending on geographic region, external market value, internal pay equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. Starting salary offers will typically be made in the bottom half of the listed range. In compliance with Equal Pay for Equal Work Acts, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
