Job Title: Academic Advisor
Direct Report: Director of School Counseling and School Director
Job Summary:
The academic advisor plays a role in supporting students' academic success by providing guidance and support throughout their educational journey. They work closely with students to help them develop and achieve their academic goals, navigate curriculum requirements, and make informed decisions about their educational pathways. The academic advisor serves as a resource for students, offering personalized assistance, monitoring progress, and promoting academic engagement.
K*_ey Responsibilities:*_
1. Provide academic guidance to students, helping them understand degree requirements, course selection, and academic policies.
2. Assist students in creating and updating academic plans that align with their individual goals and interests.
_ 3. Conduct regular academic advising sessions to monitor students' progress and address any challenges or concerns._
4. Collaborate with faculty and other stakeholders to ensure students have access to necessary support services and resources.
5. Help students explore and assess potential majors, minors, and academic programs, providing information and guidance on career pathways.
6. Support students in developing effective study skills, time management strategies, and academic success habits.
7. Stay updated on Department of Education and Workforce policies, academic programs, and degree requirements to accurately advise students.
8. Assist students in understanding transfer credit evaluation and assist with the transfer process if applicable.
9. Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records, including advising notes, academic plans, and progress reports.
10. Participate in training and professional development activities to enhance advising skills and stay informed about best practices in academic advising.
11. Collaborate with other academic advisors, faculty, and staff to improve advising practices and promote student success initiatives.
12. Stay current with trends and developments in education, advising technologies, and student support resources.
_ Qualifications:_
_ 1. Bachelor’s degree is preferred._
2. Strong knowledge of academic programs, curriculum requirements, and university/college policies.
3. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to establish rapport with students and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
_ 4. Ability to assess student needs and provide appropriate guidance and support._
5. Knowledge of advising theories, techniques, and best practices in higher education.
6. Familiarity with effective study skills, time management strategies, and academic success resources.
7. Experience working with diverse student populations and promoting inclusivity in academic advising.
8. Proficiency in using technology for advising purposes, such as maintaining student records and utilizing advising software systems.
9. Strong organizational and time management skills to handle multiple responsibilities and prioritize tasks.
10. Ability to maintain confidentiality and adhere to ethical standards in academic advising.
11. Positive attitude, patience, and empathy in working with students facing academic challenges.
12. Willingness to stay updated on trends and developments in higher education and advising practices.
