Not only does the company manage a high-end, semi-private golf course, but also three restaurants (McWethy’s Tavern, McWethy’s Sports Bar and The James), two banquet facilities (The Great Hall at Mistwood and the Grand Ballroom at Joliet Union Station) and a sports dome (Mistwood Golf Dome). We are looking for somebody to assist our Farm Manager in the operation of our on-site organic vegetable farm. We are dedicated to sustainable agriculture and producing high-quality, organic products. You will be an integral part of our farm team responsible for supporting the cultivation, maintenance and harvest of a diverse range of crops, microgreens, and ethically raised livestock. The Assistant Farm Hand will report directly to the Farm Manager. Responsible in assisting with daily operations on the farm, including planting, harvesting, feeding livestock, and maintaining farm equipment. This role requires physical labor, attention to detail, and a passion for agriculture.Specific responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
- Contributing to the establishment, promotion, and protection of the Mistwood Golf Club brand.
- Assist with planting, care, and maintenance of vegetables, microgreens, and other crops.
- Follow sustainable and organic agriculture practices, including soil conversation, crop rotation, and integrated pest management.
- Participate in the harvest of vegetables, microgreens, and other farm products at peak freshness and quality.
- Handle harvested produce with care to maintain flavor, texture, and nutritional value.
- Ensure proper post-harvest, including washing, packing, and storage.
- Feed, water, and care for livestock, ensuring their health and well-being.
- Assist with pasture management and rotational grazing practices to optimize animal health and pasture productivity.
- Support the production of high-quality microgreens, including seeding, watering, harvesting, and packaging.
- Maintain optimal growing conditions for microgreens, such as temperature, humidity, and light levels.
- Operate and maintain farm machinery and equipment safely and efficiently.
- Perform general farm maintenance tasks, including cleaning barns, repairing fences, buildings, equipment, and maintaining irrigation systems. Monitor crop and livestock health and report any issues to the Farm Manager.
- Follow all safety and hygiene protocols to ensure a safe working environment.
- Assist with packing and preparing produce for market or delivery.
- Perform other farm-related duties as assigned by the Farm Manager.
- Ability to multi-task with the highest regard.
- Understand the importance of having strong attention to detail and communication skills.

Job Requirements:

- The ability to work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment while multi-tasking is critical to your success.
- English reading, writing, math, and computer skills required.
- The ability to taste and evaluate food products.
- Strong work ethic, reliability, and willingness to learn. Good communication skills and the ability to work as part of a team.
- Stamina to work 40+ hours or more per week or as business levels dictate throughout the year.
- You must be able to work on occasion extended shifts of 8 hours or more or as business levels dictate.
- Being flexible with your schedule and able to work different shifts, including early morning, weekends, and some holidays or as business levels dictate depending on the season and farm needs.
- Possible job hazards do include, but are not limited to, slips, trips, falls, burns, cuts, and strains.
- Being able to reach, lift, stoop, bend and perform extensive standing and walking (including stairs) throughout shift.
- Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs and work in various weather conditions.
- Acting as a role model for the staff.
