CONSERVATION JOB OPENING
Position Title: District Manager/ Grant Administrator / Conservation Program Coordinator / Executive Director
Location: Kent Conservation District
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $50,000 - $60,000 annually, depending on experience

Overview
The Kent Conservation District is seeking a dynamic and experienced conservation program manager to lead and advance our mission of promoting conservation, stewardship, and sustainable use of natural resources in Kent County. The successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day operations, financial
management, programs, grants, and staff of the district.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
· Promote the district’s mission and conservation initiatives through public relations and build partnerships with local governments, officials, and organizations.
· Secure funding with partners through grants, twice yearly tree sales, and government allocations.
· Serve as the point of contact for District funding from the Michigan Department of Agricutlure and Rural Development Conservation Programs.
Operations Management
· Oversee all district programs, services, and conservation practices, including those under the Farm Bill.
· Prepare and distribute newsletters, annual reports, event calendars, and other publications.
· Plan and facilitate district events such as meetings, native tree sales, and educational programs.
· Coordinate board meetings, prepare agendas, and provide necessary reports.
· Coordinate rental of no-till drill with ag technician.
· Support NRCS staff and participate in relevant committees.
· Foster community engagement and manage conservation projects.
Financial Management
· Identify and pursue funding sources, including grants and public/private donations.
· Prepare and manage annual operating budgets and financial reports.
· Oversee payroll, billing, bank reconciliations, and financial audits with paid accounting support.
· Administer financial aspects of grants, ensuring compliance with reporting requirements.
· Prepare for bi-annual financial audits and ensure adherence to conservation laws.
Office & Facilities Management
· Act as the primary point of contact for the district, providing excellent customer service.
· Maintain office supplies and equipment inventory.
Human Resources
· Supervise and support a diverse team, including full-time, part-time, seasonal staff, and
volunteers.
· Lead hiring processes, conduct employee reviews, and manage staff development.
· Help board implement and update personnel policies and work agreements.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
· Bachelor’s Degree in natural resources, agriculture, environmental science, business management, or a related field.
· Minimum of two years of management and/or leadership experience, with a preference for three years of executive-level experience in a non-profit or governmental organization.
· Experience managing organizations with budgets ranging from $100,000 to $800,000.
· Proven skills in organizational, communication, and project management.
Skills and Abilities
· Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and lead diverse teams.
· Excellent financial management, including experience with accounting practices and QuickBooks (could hire bookkeeper for support).
· Proficiency in MS Office, Google Suite, and familiarity with website and newsletter platforms.
· Experience in fundraising, grant writing, and financial reporting.
· Strong interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to build relationships and resolve conflicts.
· Knowledge of local habitats and conservation practices is preferred.
· Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a federal background check.
Preferred Skills
· Experience in retail sales, marketing, and agricultural practices.
· Familiarity with federal and state environmental policies.
Work Schedule
This is a full-time, salaried position. Normal office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm (flexible 8 hours a day schedule start and end times flexible), with occasional evening, weekend, and overnight commitments for events, trainings, and conferences.
