This position supports and supplements The Pinwheel Healing Center Medical Team. The Medical Assistant assists the needs of the Nurse Practitioner. The Medical Assistant is empathetic individual with competent observational, clinical, critical thinking, communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills in order to meet patient needs and contribute to a positive patient care experience and work environment. Takes part in daily review on current referrals and upcoming referrals into the medical program. Provides coordinated care to a variety of patients enrolled in the Medical Program. This individual functions as part of the interdisciplinary care team by providing case management directly to patients while supporting the Nurse Practitioner and Therapists. They will assist patients with vitals, referrals to labs, coordinating UA’s, and scheduling appointments. Coordinate with therapists and office staff regarding medical services and counseling services.
Essential Duties:
- Support clients and assist them in receiving the medical care that is needed.
- Reviews vitals for all clients receiving medical care on a regular basis.
- Communicate when the client has irregular vitals and review next steps with the medical care provider.
- Help with referrals to PCP when needed.
- Coordinate with clients and CSWs to receive a UA before client is seen with the Nurse Practitioner.
- Coordinate with clients a time to get vital signs done before their appointment with the Nurse Practitioner.
- Coordinate with uploading UAs to the system
- Organize and streamline all information needed to the Nurse Practitioner before appointments, and when more information is requested.
- Make sure all lab order processes are consistent and accurate in every office.
- Schedule and assist clients in following up on lab orders and EKGs when applicable.
- Ensure results are uploaded into chart and available to Nurse Practitioner.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Ability to work independently with strong sense of focus, task oriented.
- Ability to work with culturally diverse families and communities with the ability to be culturally sensitive, appropriate and non-judgmental.
- Comprehends fundamental medical terminologies in medical delivery.
- Previous behavioral health and or medical assistant experience preferred.
- Work well under pressure and maintain a consistently pleasant and professional demeanor when communicating with the public, clients, and staff.
- Be able to maintain a calm and professional demeanor even in the face of crisis and dramatic presentation.
- Ensure that work assignments and information gathered from day-to-day work is not shared with anyone and protects all patient and agency information.
- Is knowledgeable of and maintains HIPAA standards of privacy and confidentiality.
- Strong interpersonal communication and written skills.
- Ability to work in different work settings and environments.
- Adhere to agency policies, procedures, and the professional code of ethics.
- Basic casework skills (referrals, records, advocacy)
Education/Certification/Experience Requirements:
- Certified as a Medical Assistant from a credentialed program.
- Or, currently enrolled in an MA program.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must have and maintain a current NM Driver's License.
- Bilingual/Bi-cultural preferred.
- Two (2) years' experience working with clients with co-occurring mental health/ substance abuse diagnoses, and/or lived experience.
Physical Requirements:
- The physical requirements of the positions include but are not limited to, standing, walking, sitting for extended periods of time, use of hands, balance, stoop, and squat.
- Use of a computer, keyboard and monitor is necessary.
- Must be able to lift and carry approximately 25 pounds.
- Must be able to speak English and hear spoken words.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Pay: $17.83 - $21.48 per hour
