CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
Building Construction Inspectors perform technical, inspection, enforcement and administrative functions in compliance with applicable codes, statutory requirements and standards that regulate building construction and related structures. The specific area of responsibility (mechanical, electrical, plumbing or structural) for the Inspector will depend upon certification and trades experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Inspects new and existing construction for compliance with established local, state, and federal building codes and in accordance with approved construction documents.
· Responds to, researches, and investigates construction-related inquiries and complaints regarding illegal or hazardous conditions in new and existing structures.
· Prepares stop work orders and corrections notices for non-compliance and specifies the conditions under which the construction in violation may resume.
· Documents, records, and maintains detailed records and reports involving inspection activities, e.g., inspection logs, certificates of occupancy, citations, etc.
· Conducts re-inspections to ensure previous violations have been corrected.
· Presents inspection documentation and testifies in court, as necessary, on cases requiring professional expertise in building construction methods, procedures, practices and techniques.
· Assists and advises the general public (architects, contractors, developers, engineers, owners, etc.) in matters relating to construction and code requirements.
· Adheres to and enforces safety standards and precautions at construction sites and during operation of assigned Village vehicles.
· Performs duties as assigned and scheduled during times of disaster recovery and/or emergency conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
· High school diploma or G.E.D.
· Five (5) years industry experience in the field of construction, building code inspection, plan review or a related field.
· Certified by the State of Florida as an Inspector pursuant to Chapter 468, Florida Statutes, Part XIII, for the appropriate trade; OR the ability to obtain provisional certification as an Inspector within the first ninety (90) days of hire and consequently obtain a Standard Inspector license within one (1) year of acquiring provisional certification. (Preference will be given to those candidates who currently hold a valid license, possess multiple certifications or have plan review experience.)
· Demonstrated ability to understand, review and interpret construction plans, specifications and blueprints while recognizing deviations from such plans in the construction process.
· Firsthand knowledge of the codes and regulations (including structural, electrical, gas, plumbing, mechanical and fire codes) that govern building construction, repair and alteration.
· Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
· Knowledge of current computing technologies and software applications appropriate to the position’s job responsibilities.
· Valid Florida driver’s license.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Tasks involve the intermittent performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds). Some tasks may require occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and may be subjected to unpleasant environmental factors, e.g., heat, humidity, inclement weather. Some tasks include working in and around moving vehicles and associated vehicle/equipment areas, where heightened awareness to surroundings and observance of established safety precautions are essential in avoidance of injury or accident.
