Our Design Studio team, in our Chicago office, is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer. This role will support the engineering of systems for a variety of projects while working closely with clients, client reps, architects, and MEP engineers in creating designs for all kinds of spaces.

Most duties will be performed in an office environment. dbHMS currently operates with both hybrid and remote-only work policies. The remainder of the duties will be performed in a combination of an office environment and construction/field environment which will involve trips to project sites.
While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to sit, and frequently is required to walk. The work typically requires the use of hands to type, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is regularly required to stand and perform work in the field. The typical week consists of five, eight-hour shifts.
When in the field the employee must be able to climb stairs and endure typical construction site conditions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Occasional overnight travel may be required depending on the employee’s home location. Frequent local field visits in the office metro area will be necessary. A valid and clean driver's license is required.

Position Overview
At dbHMS, Senior Mechanical Engineers are responsible for representing the company in interactions with clients, contractors, architects, and other project team members. This includes understanding and managing MEPFP deliverables on assigned projects and managing clients’ expectations.
Senior Mechanical Engineers are expected to perform HVAC design related work on assigned projects with the assistance of engineering staff. Senior Engineers work under a Group Leader within the Design Studio.
Essential Job Functions
- Providing consulting services including concept planning and design for HVAC systems
- Overseeing the production of drawings consistent with client requirements and standards
- Develop work and scheduling plans for execution of project work.
- Participate in QA/QC reviews for work completed by project teams.
- Conduct surveys of existing facilities and identify scope of work and coordination items for projects
- Establishing design standards, specifications, and criteria for projects
- Review load calculations to size HVAC equipment and systems
- Review energy modelling reports to ensure energy code, goals, and assumptions are being met on assigned projects
- Oversee review of submittals for compliance with the contract documents.
- Review and respond to construction period RFI’s and change order requests.
- Observe and report upon construction work in progress
Project Manager Responsibilities
- Oversee project engineers to ensure all the items above are delivered as a coordinated product, consistent with client requirements and standards.
- Ensure deliverables are provided to clients consistently and on schedule.
- Attend meetings with clients to ensure a high level of client satisfaction.
Requirements
- Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Architectural Engineering from an accredited university
- Ability to operate or supervise Revit BIM software
- Minimum of 8 years’ experience working in consulting firm with a minimum of 2 years Project Management experience.
- Candidate should possess a strong ability to coordinate among all MEP and Low Voltage trades, as well as discuss technical aspects of these trades at a high level.
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- P.E. Professional Engineer License.
- Ability to operate one or more energy modeling software programs.
- Specialty certifications in the design of HVAC systems such as LEED, CEM, etc.
- Member ASHRAE
- Knowledge of different sustainable building certification systems – LEED, PHIUS, LBC, Energy Star, Enterprise Green.
