About LACOSS
LACOSS isn’t just a school; it’s an immersive journey into the wonders of science. Since 1960, we’ve been igniting curiosity and fostering a love for nature among 5th and 6th grade students in our outdoor instructional site in Wrightwood in the San Gabriel Mountains. For most students, attendance at Outdoor Science School is a very memorable highlight of their school year!
Naturalist, Education Specialist II Role
Positions are for Oct-May for 24 weeks plus 2 weeks of training for the 2024-2025 school year. Hours vary and are scheduled to be completed within a 40-hour work week. Duties include on-call 2 nights per week.
These are temporary position through the Los Angeles County Office of Education, 9300 Imperial Highway, Downey, CA 90242 with the outdoor instructional site located in Wrightwood in the San Gabriel Mountains.
While on duty at the outdoor science school, lodging and some meals are provided during student programming.
You will organize and lead science learning activities for 5th/ 6th grade students, lead evening programs, train/supervise volunteer cabin leaders, and other duties common to residential outdoor education programs.
Required Education and Experience-
Bachelor degree with coursework in science (Credential is not required)

Previous experience supervising children aged 8-13

First Aid/CPR certification (WFA preferred)

Must be physically able to lead instructional hikes in a semi-wilderness setting

Must be able to deal patiently and constructively with children and teens

Good personal and group communication skills

Ability to sing and/or play a musical instrument is desired

Willing to work irregular hours
Additional Requirements: A valid California driver's license and the availability of private transportation or the ability to obtain transportation between job sites is required.
