Overview
This opportunity is primarily "work from home," but should be based within driving distance of our Okemos, MI office for in-office attendance when needed.
Job Summary
Under general oversight, this position assists with processing payroll on-time and accurately on a semi-monthly basis, as well as maintains employee time records.
Responsibilities
Work Performed
- Payroll Processing
- Enter, maintain, or process accurate information in the payroll system on a semi-monthly basis. This includes compensation, timecards, reimbursements, paid leave, holidays, deductions, withholdings, and personal information changes for all hire to retire colleagues.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and government regulations.
- Review bank details for direct deposit returns and create ACH documentation for approval.
- Assist with off-cycle payrolls upon request.
- Handle payroll related inquiries and issues in a timely and professional manner.
- Multi-State Tax Compliance
- Calculate, audit, and withhold appropriate federal, state, and local taxes from paychecks.
- Stay informed about changes in tax laws and regulations that may impact payroll processing.
- Set up and maintain local tax withholding accounts.
- Audit travel records to ensure accurate taxing regions are entered in timekeeping and payroll systems.
- Benefits Administration Support
- Collaborate with Human Resources to monitor and enter benefit elections and changes into the payroll system.
- Process leave of absence calculations per policy and partner with Human Resources for details and timelines.
- Recordkeeping and Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of employee data, including salaries, wages, deductions, and taxes withheld.
- Assist in internal and external audits related to payroll by providing necessary documentation and information.
- Generate payroll and reconciliation reports as needed for management, accounting, and regulatory purposes.
- Respond to outside requests for verification of employment for current and non-current colleagues.
- Maintain and create standard operating procedures.
- System Operations
- Troubleshoot technical issues related to payroll and timekeeping systems and collaborate with Decision Support or software vendors for resolution.
- Participate in new payroll system releases and learning modules as required.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education/Training
Minimum of an Associate degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or related discipline is required.
Experience
Minimum 2 years of experience with payroll for a multi-state/multi-jurisdiction company. Experience processing payroll with UKG Pro or UltiPro is preferred, but not required.

Working Conditions
Work is sedentary in nature and performed in an office environment. Involves frequent contact with staff and clients. Work may be stressful at times. May require travel at times (~5%).
Physical/Mental Demands
Work requires hand dexterity for office machine operation; stooping, climbing, and bending to files and supplies; mobility to complete errands; stand/sit for up to eight hours each day; ability to communicate clearly when using the telephone; requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting, and twisting at times; moderate levels of stress. Ability to lift up to 20 pounds at times.
