Schedule: Generally 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM
Salary: Based on education & certification
When needed, Substitute Teachers will be contacted to provide classroom instruction for deaf students in an educational setting.Responsible for providing and implementing the daily lesson plans according to the school’s requirements. Manages the classroom environment, provides activities, materials and promotes student learning in the absence of the regular classroom teacher. Works under general supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
- Implements and carries out the lesson plans/activities for assigned students as outlined by absent teacher
- Plans and uses appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned as outlined by absent teacher.
- Works cooperatively with instructional and support staff as needed to assist students in their classroom assignments.
- Presents subject matter according to guidelines established by IEP and lesson plans.
- Employs a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned when appropriate and possible.
- Establishes and maintains order in the classroom.
- Maintains classroom environment conducive to effective learning and appropriate for students
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
- Assists in upholding and enforcing school rules and expectations.
- Manages student behavior and administers discipline.

The minimum number of hours required to be worked by substitute employees each month is as follows:
- Substitute Teacher/TA: 28 hours per month
- Other Substitute Roles: 32 hours per month
Individuals working in a combination of substitute teacher/TA and other substitute role assignments will be required to work a minimum of 28 hours per month.
- Minimum of 60 hours of college/university coursework.
- One year of experience in child or special needs population care.
- Sign Language: At hire, the applicant must have sign language skills equivalent to a Signed Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) level of ADVANCED. When applying, the applicant must submit documentation that the applicant believes substantiates that the applicant has achieved the proficiency level required at hire.
- Texas Deaf Education or Special Education Certification through the State Board for Educator Certification
- Bachelor’s Degree in education, special education, deaf education, or in a related field
- Experience and/or training in behavior and/or classroom management
- Proficient signed communications skills
