JOB TITLE: Application Engineer/Design Engineer
FLSA Status: Exempt
POSITION SUMMARY
Perform estimating and engineering duties for automatic fire sprinkler and standpipe systems. Uses CAD equipment to prepare layouts of automatic fire sprinkler systems, detail drawings, assembly drawings, sketches, and diagrams. Details to include all views and dimensions necessary for installation. Scan drawings and maintain information regarding changes to database. Solid understanding of drafting techniques, familiarity with design of fire sprinkler system and familiarity with the terminology of the sprinkler industry. Mechanical aptitude with ability to complete basic mathematical calculations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- General understanding of NFPA 13, NFPA 13D, NFPA 13R, NFPA 14 and NFPA 20.
- Read and interpret ASMEP blueprints/PDF’s, technical drawings, schematics, or computer-generated reports.
- Meet with current and potential clients.
- Generate proposals for projects.
- Take part in online meetings for design coordination and site walks as needed.
- Research, design, and maintain plans of fire sprinkler layout and shop drawings utilizing software.
- Confer with engineers/consultants or other personnel to coordinate the layout of a code-compliant fire sprinkler system.
- Design automatic fire sprinkler and standpipe systems utilizing a most cost-effective design and materials.
- Coordinate, or monitor aspects of production, including fabrication, installation issues, and inspection comments. Update drawings to reflect as-builts.
- Identify solutions to improve production efficiency.
- Specify and Design Electric and Diesel fire pumps.

Technology Skills

Knowledge
- Engineering and Technology — Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of fire sprinkler systems.
- Codes – Understanding of current NFPA codes relating to fire sprinkler design and components and how to perform research within them.
- Mathematics — Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and their applications.
- Design — Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
- Physics — Knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to understanding hydraulics and dynamics.
Education
Bachelor's degree preferred but not required. Three to five years of experience is a must.
Physical Demands
The physical demands here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The employee is occasionally required to sit, squat, kneel, crawl, climb, push, pull and lift and carry items weighing fifty pounds or less as well as to frequently walk, stand, bend, twist, reach and to do simple and power grasping of up to fifty pounds. The position requires manual deviation, repetition, and dexterity.
Travel
Occasional travel may be required to visit job sites. Occasional overnight travel to other offices and regions.
