We're looking for great PSAs to join our ABHS Detox team in providing care and services for our community and clients. Our PSAs are key parts of our team and provide security for our staff members and its clients receiving behavioral health treatment services for substance use disorders and mental health disorders in an inpatient environment. This position may involve some level of care for our clients.
Additionally, our PSAs:
- monitor clients for behavioral changes or inappropriate behavior under the supervision of management on duty.
- Demonstrate effective critical thinking and other problem-solving skills.
- Accurately convey and document client behavior and status, intervention use, client response and client progress both verbally and in writing to clients and members of the treatment team.
- Respond to clients’ needs, concerns, and maintain appropriate order and safety for all clients.
- Utilize seclusion and restraint in emergency situations in compliance with ABHS’ Seclusion and Restraint Policy, WAC 246-341-1104(2)(b), and WAC 246-337-110.
- Ensure all procedures are followed and relevant medical staff are contacted in a timely manner. Coordinate outside law enforcement involvement if necessary.
Qualifications/Skills:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- NAR or CNA preferred
- Two years’ experience providing patient care in a psychiatric, mental health or closely related setting (college-level course work in social science may be substituted for required experience on a year-to-year basis)
- Trained in managing aggressive behaviors and trained in security management to include physical restraint, personal protection and crowd management
- CPR/First Aid certified
- Agency Affiliated Counselor Certification
- Must have emotional control, de-escalation skills, integrity, professionalism, reporting skills, and compassion
- Meet necessary health and physical requirements
Health and Physical Demands:Must be mentally and physically fit, and able to swiftly respond to potentially volatile situations. Must be able to sit, stand, walk, run and sprint a minimum of 100 yards. Must be able to lift a minimum of 125 pounds. These are the minimal requirements necessary to quickly respond to and physically restrict combative and volatile persons by use of direct person-to-person contact. Must be willing to physically engage in client restraint in a safe but effective manner.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in a behavioral health treatment unit setting and requires contact with individuals who have substance use disorders, mental health disorders, behavioral, emotional, psychiatric, social, medical and/or correctional problems and who may exhibit inappropriate, non-compliant and/or aggressive behavior. As a direct care provider, your work involves providing physical supports/interventions for clients using program approved methods which may include moving, transferring, containing, or restraining clients. May escort clients outdoors and be subject to all weather conditions, which may involve minor physical discomfort.
Essential Functions:
- Ensure the physical safety of clients and staff; safely and therapeutically intervene with clients exhibiting high risk behaviors.
- Protect employees and clients from acts of physical violence from uncooperative clients.
- Demonstrate de-escalation skills by utilizing the least restrictive interventions.
- In emergency situations, utilize seclusion and restraint in a manner that is safe, proportionate and appropriate to the severity of the behavior, the client’s chronological and developmental age, size, gender, physical, medical and psychiatric condition and personal history.
- Adhere to ABHS’ Seclusion and Restraint Policy, WAC 246-341-1104(2)(b), and WAC 246-337-110 when performing seclusion and restraint; contact medical staff timely.
- Recognize and report significant changes in client condition communicate therapeutically with clients at all times.
- Maintain professional and therapeutic boundaries with clients.
- Listen to clients’ concerns and resolve the matter and/or refer clients to the appropriate staff member for resolution.
- Ability to take written and verbal orders.
- Ensure the needs of ABHS’ clients are met with dignity and respect and timely.
