Building upon a legacy of many years of international ESL experience, ASC English has been supporting and providing English classes and educational services to international students and business employees in the Boston area since 1993.
Scope and Function
The Assistant Director of Programs oversees the adult academic programs for ASC English and handles curriculum development, teacher training and management (with Lead Teachers) and the academic accreditation process (CEA process). The essence of the role is a strong academic vision for the organization that prioritizes a quality student experience, modern teaching and learning methods, and effective teacher support to improve teacher hiring and retention
Responsibilities include:
Curriculum Development
· Constantly reviewing ASC English adult programs curricula for all levels and providing support and guidance to teachers on current curriculum
· Working with Lead Teachers to develop and roll out new lessons, ideas and exercises for adult learners of English
· Keeping active and updated with current pedagogical trends, learning studies and industry directions
· Providing quality control and process improvement in the curriculum development process
Management of Teaching Staff
· Working with HR to hire staff and working with Lead Teachers to hire subs
· Training new teachers and subs on school expectations, processes and curricula
· With Lead Teachers, scheduling for teachers and securing of necessary subs and replacements, as needed, as well as serving as sub for classes when sub pool is limited
· Running Zooms for online programs and monitoring classes for questions, issues and technical problems
· Communicating with teacher staff and developing teacher education and onboarding and holding staff meetings
· Training teachers on required CEA assessment processes, including developing training material and presenting material
· Working with HR and leadership on hiring, performance management, discipline and termination processes, as needed
· Processing payroll for all teachers, handling payroll questions and issues from teachers, with payroll team
Student Support and Counseling
· Providing support for new admissions and new students
· Managing the placement testing process to determine course levels for student placement, with Lead Teachers
· Advising students on courses and programs that will allow them to maintain appropriate status and drive retention
· Provide retention guidance to other program leaders and ASC leadership
· Advising students on colleges and universities for post-ESL study
Operations and Office Administration
· Working with Center Managers of two locations, plus organization leadership and HR, to develop office policies, practices and procedures
· Supporting Center Managers on operations issues and questions, as needed, as well as providing backup for sales and marketing, collection of payments and community outreach
· Attending and presenting at open houses (when Covid conditions permit) for prospective students and academic partners
· Handling the CEA accreditation process on its every-two-year cycle and seeking support and guidance on CEA process, plus producing lessons learned from previous cycles
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs required):
· Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
· Strong marketing skills and ability to gain the confidence of stakeholders
· Admissions experience and experience creating presentations, materials and programs to enhance school admission and retention
· Project management skills to manage competing priorities- including strong time management skills and high attention to detail
· Ability to collaborate and cooperate with many stakeholders to create success
· Ability to communicate with callers and visitors successfully and respectfully
· Good organization and direction skills
· Supportive, warm and positive demeanor
· Cultural awareness and respect for all cultures and national origins
· Ability to access reliable transportation (public or personal) to the office and ability to be punctual
Education and Experience
· Requires 3-5 years experience in an academic environment, ESL school environment strongly preferred
· Academic marketing experience preferred
· CEA experience strongly preferred
· Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
Managerial and Supervisory Experience:
· Previous experience with supervision of one or more employees preferred
· Requires ability to work with ASC leadership and HR to provide feedback on hires, performance management, discipline and terminations
Physical Work Duties:
Job is rated as Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects
Requires seated positions, standing positions, reaching, lifting, conveying materials, communicating (speaking, hearing), fine motor control for typing, visual acuity to check the work quality of others. Ability to handle light cleaning work and visually inspect premises.

Pay: $65,000.00 - $75,000.00 per year
