The Communications Coordinator serves as a citywide communications advisor, produces internal and external communications, advises city officials and departments in effective communications and contributes to positive public and community relations. The Communications Coordinator works under the general direction of the Director of Planning and Development and works in coordination with the Mayor’s office.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in public relations, communications, journalism, English, marketing or similar field; five or more years of experience in communications, social media, graphic design or website management; demonstrated effectiveness in written communication; proficiency in all forms of communication media. Any equivalent combination of accepted training and experience may be considered. Must possess a valid driver’s license.
Essential Functions
· Gather information and produce content for a variety of communication channels including digital, print, video and social media. Analyze data and disseminate information to appropriate channels and/or adjust project goals based on results.
· Prepare press releases, public announcements and related correspondence to communicate programs and items of public interest to the media and the public.
· Develop and/or write communication and promotional material including speeches, editorial columns and other content for a variety of audiences.
· Serve as a communication specialist on assigned projects involving the development and implementation of a communication plan for a specific topic, project, issue or event.
· Manage the City website and prepare/coordinate updates and graphics as necessary. Review and edit the content of information submitted by city departments/divisions for posting on the City website for accuracy and style.
· Create, moderate and implement social media strategies and tactics.
· Arrange for photographs to be used in publications and videos for presentations.
· Track media coverage and work proactively with media representation from local print, radio and TV outlets using diplomacy, reasonable judgment and tact.
· Prepare, assist and advise on marketing campaigns for city departments/divisions. Prepare, write and produce marketing material, visuals, presentations and other marketing related communications.
· Plan and promote City-sponsored events and support event planning efforts by departments.
· Attend City and other community meetings as needed to stay informed of items of interest from staff and community.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
· Knowledge of: City policies and procedures*; City Charter and organizational structure*; technical requirements to do the job at a high level of accomplishment; legal principles concerning public records and public information requests.
· Skill in: Utilization of word processing, desktop publishing/graphic design and computer-generated public presentation technology to effectively and efficiently carry out public and internal communications functions.
· Ability to: Work independently and effectively plan, coordinate, organize, schedule and prioritize activities, functions and assignments with flexibility to adapt to changing and urgent deadlines; handle confidential material.

Personal computer, printer, copy machine, and other standard business office equipment, along with phone, camera, video equipment, etc.
Physical Demands and Work Conditions
Frequently required to sit, talk and hear. Required to manipulate office equipment/machines. May occasionally lift and/or move 25 pounds. Specific vision capability required, e.g. color vision and the ability to focus. On occasion exposed to outside weather conditions. Environment may be occasionally stressful in dealing with the public.
