We're looking for a PART-TIME OR FULL-TIME Pastry Assistant at our micro-bakery in Fairfax City, VA. We specialize in classic Italian pastry using premium ingredients and traditional techniques with a mix of small pre-order, catering, and limited retail clients.
Who We Are: Our mission is to connect customers to nostalgic food memories they grew up with, just like their nonnas and bisnonnas used to make. Bisnonna translates to great-grandmother in Italian, and we pride ourselves on using handed-down generational recipes and staying connected to our roots in family and tradition. We're very proud to make all of our products in-house, where every bake is by hand and from scratch.
Job Description:
Our Pastry Assistant will work collaboratively with the Pastry Chef to execute our weekly production. This position is available either part-time (15-20 hours per week) or full-time (38 hours per week) depending on the right candidate. This is a non-exempt position with a salary range of $18 - 20 per hour depending on the candidate's qualifications.
Because of our shop model, our production schedule changes weekly based on our orders. Our Pastry Assistant must be comfortable learning a large roster of recipes and shifting priorities and tasks week to week.
The Pastry Assistant will:
- Prepare ingredients for baking, including weighing and portioning accurately.
- Bake products according to recipes, quality standards, and food safety best-practices.
- Maintain accurate inventory of products and ingredients.
- Provide customer-facing support during pop-ups, like filling cannoli or running register.
- Independently and accurately package and prepare pre-orders orders for customers.
- Wash and disinfect kitchen area, floors, tables, tools, knives, and equipment daily.
- Be able to stand for prolonged periods of time or an entire work shift.
- Be able to move or lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
You'll be a Great Fit if You:
- Have at least 1-2 years of previous professional baking or pastry experience;
- Know your way around pastry fundamentals, and have specific experience with drop, rolled, and piped cookies, creams, and doughs;
- Are a quick and curious learner, and you are able to replicate processes with ease;
- Work efficiently and accurately with little supervision;
- Have strong attention to detail and don't miss the small things;
- Thrive being part of a close-knit, collaborative, and creative small team;
- Can effectively plan and prioritize your own to-do lists across multiple products and timelines;
- Enjoy everything from Celine Dion to Fall Out Boy as our kitchen jams.
Our kitchen is a co-op space shared with two other all-female teams. We value respect and cleanliness in our shared workspace and equipment, and enjoy cheering on each other's businesses and celebrating our wins!
Nuts & Bolts:
- $18 - $20 per hour, commensurate with experience.
- Overtime eligible, with likely overtime during busy holiday seasons (Christmas, Easter).
- $100/month stipend for healthcare reimbursement available.
- Paid sick leave accrual.
- Must be available for Saturday shifts including the hours of 9:00am - 3:00pm. Other required shifts given with plenty of advanced notice.
- Additional shifts days/times are flexible, to be coordinated with the Chef upon hiring. Shifts are seven hours long with a paid 30-minute lunch break. Weekday shifts are typically 8:00am - 3:30pm.
