Qualifications include preference for a Bachelor’s Degree in health-related field, education or wellness. Experience with public health programs and community coalitions is preferred. Strong oral & written communication skills; proficiency with computers & internet; competency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) desired. Responsible for assisting the South Dakota Tobacco Control Program (SD TCP) to coordinate tobacco prevention projects in South Dakota. Duties include assisting with program goals to (1) Prevent tobacco use among youth and young adults, (2) Promote quitting of all tobacco products, (3) Eliminate all types of exposure to tobacco use, and (4) Strive to reach health equity in tobacco control.
The Tobacco Prevention Coordinator (TPC) will:
- Provide outreach to K-12 school districts, through tobacco-free school policy support, presentations, and implementing tobacco prevention toolkit activities.
- Assist with planning an annual Spring Tobacco Control Institute.
- Provide technical assistance on the adoption and implementation of tobacco-free policies in settings such as parks, multi-unit housing, rodeo grounds, workplaces, and healthcare systems.
- Coordinate and promote efforts around national advocacy campaigns (i.e. Great American Smokeout, Kick Butts Day, etc.)
- Create content for a monthly newsletter page featured in the Prevention Newslink.
- Assist the TCP with program development, training, and evaluation as needed.
- Utilize data to create publications such as infographics and data summaries.
- Review grant applications and assisting with the award process.
- Participate in national, state, and local trainings, webinars, and meetings.
- Promote the South Dakota QuitLine and other cessation resources by using materials developed by the State.
- Provide tobacco prevention and chronic disease prevention and health promotion technical assistance, resources, and referrals to communities, businesses, schools, and healthcare providers.
