QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s Degree preferred
Experience: Five (5) years or more of progressively responsible work experience in schools and/or law enforcement
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Specialist for School Safety & Emergency Management provides leadership and operational oversight for system-wide initiatives and functions related to safety and security. Provides direct coordination of resources to support and enhance safety and security at all district facilities. Programs, policies, operations, and procedures related to school district safety and security are managed to promote a safe and secure environment for teaching and learning. As the liaison to city, county, state, and federal agencies, provides leadership in the district response to any crisis and emergency response. Works collaboratively with staff, students, families, and community agencies to form viable partnerships for the support and development of safety and security best practices.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance
- Manages and communicates the district and schools’ operational safety and security efforts, programs, and protocols
- Facilitates an integrated management system that includes policies, procedures, and processes aligned to the overall district mission as it pertains to school safety and security
- Develops, implements, and maintains a comprehensive district-wide safety program
- Works to mitigate and eliminate hazardous activities and/or the use of unsafe practices and replace them with current best practices
- Analyzes and reports data relative to school safety and security
- Maintains school safety and security database and utilizes data to modify programs and services and prepares recommendations for the Chief Operations Officer
- Consults with school and district administrators on safety issues related to facilities, curriculum, field trips, and school-based programs
- Oversees and coordinates the district’s emergency drill schedule with Principals and Safety Administrators
- Coordinates annual vulnerability assessments designed to improve the safety and security of district facilities and enhance emergency management planning and response
- Develops, implements, and manages policies, procedures, and programs designed to provide a safe and secure learning environment, control access to facilities, and minimize losses
- Analyzes and interprets data, identifies trends, and recommends corrective actions based on information contained in federal, state, district, and other associated reports
- Coordinates the district safety and security program and provides leadership, resources, and training to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations and district policies and procedures as a member of the District Safety Team
- Communicates with school-based faculty, staff, Governance Teams/Boards (SGT and SGB), PTA/PTSA/Booster Clubs, and community groups on issues related to school safety
- Works with Cabinet Members and departments to provide services related to or required to enhance safety and security
- Researches, organizes, develops, and submits required reports to the Chief Operations Officer, Superintendent, and School Board as directed
- Maintains a level of visibility at MCS athletic events
- Performs other related duties as required

- Demonstrated knowledge of safety and security issues related to schools and education facilities
- Demonstrated experience and proven ability in administering a large and complex program
- Demonstrated skill in district and building operations and service
- Demonstrated skill in evaluating and improving systems, protocols, and practices
- Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication
- Experienced responsibility for leading projects within budget
- Effective team member and high functioning individual contributor
