The Heavy Trailer Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of heavy trailers. This role requires a thorough understanding of trailer systems and components, including brakes, suspensions, electrical, and hydraulic systems. The mechanic ensures that all trailers are in safe, working condition and comply with regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspection and Diagnosis:
- Perform detailed inspections of trailers to identify issues and potential problems.
- Use diagnostic tools and equipment to assess and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
Maintenance and Repair:
- Conduct routine maintenance services such as oil changes, tire rotations and replacement, and brake adjustments.
- Repair or replace defective parts, components, and systems, including drum/disk brake repair, suspensions, and electrical wiring/troubleshooting/lighting repair.
- Ensure all repairs meet safety and operational standards.
- Troubleshooting issues and performing repairs on small engines, air systems, and hydraulics.
Record Keeping:
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed.
- Document inspection findings and repairs completed in maintenance logs.
Compliance:
- Ensure all trailers comply with state and federal regulations, including safety inspections and emissions standards.
- Stay updated with industry regulations and standards to ensure compliance.
Safety:
- Follow all safety protocols and guidelines while performing repairs and maintenance.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment to prevent accidents and injuries.
Customer Service:
- Communicate effectively with drivers and shop manager regarding the status of repairs and maintenance.
- Provide estimates for repair costs and timelines.
Team Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with other mechanics and maintenance staff.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical school certification is preferred.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a mechanic, preferably with heavy trailers.
- Strong knowledge of trailer systems, including brakes, suspensions, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver’s license; CDL is a plus.
- Truck and trailer alignment experience is a plus, but not required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift heavy objects up to 75 pounds.
- Ability to work in various positions, including standing, kneeling, and bending, for extended periods.
- Comfortable working in different environments, including outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
