These positions are responsible for the protection of life and property throughout the Port area and the immediate environment and are proprietary security officers authorized to carry a firearm charged with the safety, security and protection of port personnel, its stakeholders and all properties in accordance with federal, state and local laws. In addition, these positions must follow all security, traffic and safety rules and regulations and engage in support activities to first responders.
Flex Security positions are entitled to paid time off and health and welfare benefits in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. They are assigned to a flexible watch shift within their 40-hour workweek.
Must have knowledge of the following: the use, care and safe handling of firearms, laws controlling, and the procedures, practices and techniques necessary to execute Port of Tacoma Patrol operations; laws, codes and regulations concerning port security activities, transportation security incidents, criminal activity, emergency response, Incident Command Structure and National Incident Management System, and others as applicable; techniques, practice and procedures necessary for effective interaction with the general public, victims, suspects and officers of other agencies and municipalities; Port security duty manuals, facility security plans, departmental organizations, administrative direction and culture and all other applicable regulations and policies; basic personal computer and technology skills.
Must be skilled in the following: use and care of firearms and radio communications equipment; executing policing and security performance tasks as they relate to port operations and waterfront activities, including physical, supply chain, waterways and information security; execution of first responder, investigative duties and emergency vehicle operations; usage and application of defensive tactics, use of force policies, intermediate weapons, standard policing and tactical equipment, the National Incident Management System/Incident Command Structure, and others.
Must have the ability to: cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others; analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine a proper course of action to be taken; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; write and speak effectively, accurately and comprehensively; learn administrative procedures connected with port security work; maintain eligibility for commissioning by state or city police and the county sheriff; sustain unquestionable integrity and be bondable; physically perform all assigned duties; maintain an excellent driving record; respond favorably to stress; sustain strong anger management skills and maintain a high degree of emotional stability; effectively operate computers and their appropriate software programs; serve as a first responder in emergency situations and perform first aid procedures, including CPR.

Must be willing to work any shift. Duties and responsibilities are performed mostly in a field environment, while executing port security and policing activities. Operates from a Port vehicle or on-foot, executes operations in an office and a variety of field areas and environments, and performs duties in unpredictable conditions and frequent exercise of moderate physical effort.

The successful candidate must possess (or obtain within 30 days of employment) a valid driver's license. Candidate must be able to successfully complete a post-offer substance abuse test (includes both drug and alcohol) and background investigation, with includes a DMV request and reference check.
