Title of Position: Occupational Therapist
Location: Gateways Main Hospital

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
OTR must be a graduate of an accredited college or university with a degree in occupational therapy. OTR must be licensed in California by the California Board of Occupational Therapy (CBOT) with continuing certification through the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). Prior mental health experience preferred, but not required.
The OTR/L works as part of a multi-disciplinary team to provide quality mental health services to adult and adolescent patients in an inpatient psychiatric setting. The OT department at Gateways Hospital evaluates patients functional task skills and social interaction skills through engagement in structured tasks and activities. Interventions are primarily provided in a group setting with occasional individual sessions. The responsibilities of the OTR/L include planning and implementing group interventions built around engagement in meaningful occupations. The position also involves participation in multi-disciplinary treatment planning meetings, completion of weekly progress notes, and functional assessments at the time of admission. The OT department at Gateways Hospital provides a positive work environment that encourages creativity and collaboration among therapists while promoting quality, evidence-based interventions.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ability to communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing.
- Able to demonstrate knowledge of individual and group Occupational Therapy interventions.
- Able to demonstrate basic skills in assessing patient dangerousness to self and /or others.
- Able to demonstrate knowledge of professional ethical and legal standards in accordance with AOTA (American Occupational Therapy Association) regulations.
- Skilled in establishing therapeutic relationships with difficult patients.
- Able to perform OT functional assessments.
- Able to work cooperatively and professionally in an interdisciplinary setting.
- Able to appropriately participate in supervision and be open to critical feedback
- Incorporates guidance and feedback in individual and group supervision, training sessions, and informal teaching moments to improve his/her skills.
- Maintains job interest and technical skills.
- Works collaboratively and professionally with all co-workers.
- Effectively manages his/her time, sets priorities, and meets deadlines.
- Responds appropriately under difficult or stressful circumstances.
- Performs other additional related tasks as assigned.
- Provides supervision to OT fieldwork students.
EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Clinical experience in mental health settings through previous employment or fieldwork experiences.
- Assessment of risk of violence
- Integration of treatment and supervision in clinical work.
- Crisis intervention.
- Preparation of written client evaluations and progress reports.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
- Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing.
- Knowledge of psychiatric terminology.
- Basic knowledge of trauma informed care.
- Ability to provide group treatment with patients who present with a variety of mental health symptoms.
- Ability to function as a member of multi-disciplinary treatment team.
- Ability to accurately observe and document clients behaviors and treatment sessions.
- Ability to communicate effectively in Spanish, both verbally and in writing. (For designated bilingual Spanish position only)
- Good writing skills.
- Ability to utilize feedback effectively.
- Computer skills (Ability to learn Electronic Health Record and other company computer programs)
- Computer skills in word processing, Google Docs, Excel.
EDUCATION:
Minimum Education Required:
- A Masters degree in Occupational Therapy from an accredited college or university.
REQUIREMENTS
- Licensed as an Occupational Therapist in good standing with the State of California.
- CPR Certification\*
- Management of Aggressive Behavior (M.O.A.B.)\*
- Must pass Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), and CONREP background clearance.
- Must maintain a clear criminal record for continued employment eligibility
- TB clearance.
- Fire and Safety Training\*.
- California class C drivers license
- Driving record acceptable for coverage by Gateways Hospital insurance carrier.
- Note: If indicated certifications/licenses are lacking, they must be obtained within 180 days of hire.

- Approximately 50% of time is spent sitting, while frequently required to walk, stand and bend. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Employee will be required to lift and/or move unassisted up to 20 pounds.
