Duties: Under the supervision of the Small Parks Manager, the Small Parks Assistant Manager is responsible for:

Responsible for mowing grass, trimming shrubs and caring for all plantings in the parks.

Performing preventative maintenance on all equipment.

Keeping grounds free of all debris, checking for vandalism and making immediate reports.
-
Maintaining athletic fields and other facilities located in the parks.

Assisting the Park Manager with supervision of staff assigned to the parks, keeping time and attendance records and other reports as requested.

Working with other parks division maintenance crews during winter months on an as-needed basis.
-
In the absence of the Manager, be in charge of the maintenance work and crew as instructed.

Following all safety procedures that pertain to the duties performed. Supporting all aspects of the Park District’s safety program.

Performing all other duties as assigned.
Pay Scale: Apprentice Rate: $24.05 per hour; After 3 months, base pay: $30.06 per hour. Maximum pay rate is $32.06 per hour.
Essential Functions:

Ability to reach, walk, pull, kneel, squat and bend at the knees and waist.

Ability to operate power machinery as needed to complete job duties.

Ability to balance on ladders and uneven surfaces.

Ability to climb ladders and stairs.

Ability to apply pesticides safely.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
Education: Four-year degree in Horticulture, Parks and Recreation Management or related field, or a two-year Associate degree in this field and at least two years of experience in park or grounds maintenance work. Extensive experience in a like position with similar duties and responsibilities may be substituted for all or part of the educational requirement.
Experience: Experience in park operations desired and some experience in operating tractors, irrigation systems, mowing equipment and machinery used in grounds maintenance. Supervisory experience preferred.
Knowledge and Ability:
- Basic understanding of horticulture and equipment operations, and maintenance.

Ability to supervise seasonal employees.

Ability to effectively deal with the public as well as emergency situations.

Ability to work harmoniously with other employees of the Parks Division.

Ability to work weekends, evenings, holidays and special events as required.

This position is represented by the Teamster's Local Union No. 627.

Must possess a valid Illinois State driver’s license.

Must possess or obtain a valid operator’s pesticide spray license.
