STAFF DEVELOPMENT NURSE
Job Summary
The Staff Development Nurse (SDN) is responsible for overall education, in-service, and orientation of the nursing department. The SDN plans, develops, implements and records all education activities. The SDN assists with interviewing and hiring of potential personnel and assumes other related nursing responsibilities as assigned by the Director Of Nursing.
Education
The Staff Development Nurse must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing, currently registered with the state agency for nursing licensure, and hold a valid nursing license in the state the Staff Development Nurse is employed. Registered Nurse 01.Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.02.Holds current registration in the state in which employed03.One year experience in a long term health care facility.04.Must complete the “Train the Trainee Program”. OR Licensed Practical Nurse01.Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.02.Holds a current registration in the state in which employed.03.Works directly under direction of the Staff Development Coordinator as Training Director.04.One year experience in a long term care facility.05.Must complete the “Train the Trainee Program”. Must have experience in long term care to be able to teach specialized procedures as related to the elderly. Experience as “teacher” helpful, but will train. Must have knowledge of nursing policies and procedures. Must be able to secure adequate instructions for specialized areas.
Qualifications
1. At least one year of long term care experience 2. Demonstrates leadership and managerial ability balanced by strong clinical knowledge and skills.3. Has the ability to organize, plan and supervise the Nursing Department in coordination with other resident services.4. Demonstrates leadership and management ability to lead the Nursing Department in a cost effective, professional manner.5. Maintains effective interpersonal relationships and works well with the general public.6. Is capable of implementing changes as mandated by Federal, State and management recommendations.7. Is of good emotional, mental and physical health, having sound judgement and high profession standards.8. Has a desire to work with the geriatric clientele as well as residents of any age and their current prospective needs. 9. Must be willing to be in the facility working with the staff of each shift at varying times.10. Must be willing to be in and/or available to the facility weekends as well as weekdays.11. Must be willing to participate in the on call schedule. 12. Must demonstrate ability to follow recommendations as designated by the Director of Nursing13. Must demonstrate ability to evaluate the resident’s needs and implement systems to assure staff education is provided to provide quality care. 14. Must demonstrate the ability to function as a cooperative team member with all disciplines15. Must demonstrate the ability to manage Nursing Department within designated staffing and supply budget.16. Is willing and capable of providing emergency care as needed for any resident in the facility.17. Must have a pre-employment and an annual Tuberculosis screening examination as required by the state the Staff Development Nurse is employed.
Responsibilities
The Staff Development Nurse works with the Director of Nursing to assure the following responsibilities are accomplished. This list is only partial and should not be interpreted as a comprehensive inventory of all duties, tasks and responsibilities. 1. Supervises resident care techniques in relation to skills competency of nursing staff to include medication pass, incontinent care, restorative techniques, tube feeding, catheter care, etc.2. Rounds to monitor how staff provides resident care as a basis for determining priorities in designing ongoing in-service program, with the assistance from department heads and consultants.3. Maintains and oversees Infection Control Program, follows up on lab, ensures resident infections are resolved. 4. Maintains Resident and Employee Vaccination Program to include administering vaccines and monitoring for side effects.5. Does orientation for all new personnel. Works with, assists, coordinates and supervises the total program of orientation with the department heads and consultants working in the nursing department.6. Plans and implements in-service programs for the development and improvement of the skills of all facility personnel.7. Monitors and evaluates the ongoing orientation and in-service activities for new and current staff in all departments. 8. Checks care of residents to ensure plan of care is followed by staff.9. Maintains records for the staff development program: total program schedule, each program service attended or presented and individual employee record documentation in accordance to policy and procedure.10. Provides and uses a variety of teaching methods, materials and resources for program presentations.11. Assists with and participates in the orientation and in-service for volunteers.12. Assists with the development and conduct of student affiliate programs as a stimulator for developing these programs and as a facility liaison person with the appropriate school representatives.13. Interviews perspective candidates for nurse assistant hiring, and training program.14. Plans and implements Nurse Aide training program in accordance with state and federal requirements. 15. Maintains comfortable and pleasant environment and promotes elimination of hazards.16. Ensures supplies are available in proper quantities, that equipment is available in good condition, and that personnel using such supplies and equipment know where such are to be found and know the proper care and use. 17. Ensures that all personnel on the shift are oriented to the duties assigned to them.18. Assigns personnel according to various skills in relation to resident needs.19. Stimulates interest and attitudes in personnel to develop understanding of and encourage health and restorative nursing practices.20. Gives guidance to personnel as needed, evaluates performance, and discusses progress, needs or improvement. 21. Have the ability to learn computer systems, system applications and related office equipment. 22. Promotes effective work relationships with the administrator, medical staff, personnel, volunteers, agencies, and management staff affiliated with the facility. 23. Attends and participates in facility meetings. 24. Participates in Quality Assessment and Improvement Program25. Participates in Quality Assessment Performance Improvement Program26. Reviews Quality Measures and takes an active role in improving quality. 27. Assist with investigations and follow up of incidents, accidents and grievances. 28. Audits documentation29. Reports immediately to Director of Nursing and Facility Administrator, situations involving abuse, neglect, or suspicion of a crime. 30. Adheres to the Code of Conduct, Compliance Program, HIPAA Standard, and Computer Usage Agreement.31. Performs any other responsibilities as discussed and designated by the Director of Nursing.

Job Location
Must work throughout all areas of the facility. May require working irregular hours and may be exposed to communicable diseases and/or body fluids, medical preparations, toxic substances and occasionally ionizing radiation. Occasional travel/overnights required for training, professional meetings, emergencies, and evacuations.
