Job Summary
The PE/HOPE teacher at Orlando Science Middle/High School is responsible for planning and implementing physical and health education activities, monitoring students, and evaluating student progress and participation.
To perform the job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the job duties and responsibilities and meet the qualifications posted below.
Minimum Job Qualifications
- Valid State Teacher Certification approved by the State Department of Education
- Bachelor’s Degree with a major or minor in Physical Education or in a Health-related field
- English Language fluency
- Possess practical oral and written communication skills
- Communicate effectively with individuals of varied cultural and educational backgrounds
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Over two years of experience as a PE/HOPE teacher
- Knowledgeable in teaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students
Essential Job duties and responsibilities
1. Provide academic instruction for students, ensuring lesson plans are in line with the curriculum schedule
2. Plan activities, including the daily lesson plans
3. Identify the materials to implement in PE activities and prepare class projects
4. Confer with other teachers for peer collaboration
5. Regularly communicate basis about the schedule, assignments, events, and individual student needs
6. Meet with parents during scheduled student/teacher conferences
7. Maintain grades and curriculum online
8. Attend monthly faculty meetings
9. Work with administrators and instructional teams to plan and implement hands-on programs and activities for students and the school

Duties and Responsibilities
1. Teach knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythms, dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Florida Department of Education and other appropriate learning activities
2. Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district
3. Work cooperatively with other physical education teachers in planning a balanced physical education program.
4. Analyze, demonstrates, and explain basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, games, rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement
5. Provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student to the extent feasible
6. Provide appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of students
7. Maintain control of storage and use of school-owned property
8. Establish and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas
9. Evaluate each student's growth in physical skills, knowledge, and contribution to team sports
10. Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities
11. Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines
12. Communicate with parents and school counselors on student progress
13. Identify student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems
14. Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned workday
15. Demonstrate compassion to students, and parents, and foster student self-esteem
16. Communicate with parents to ensure parents’ involvement in their child's development
17. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal

Many of our teachers from our Orlando Science Campus have attended national conferences focusing on reading, science, math, and specific teaching methodologies. Multiple professional days are scheduled in advance each school year.

Orlando Science Charter School offers competitive salaries to newly hired and experienced teachers. Teachers with a master's degree are offered additional salary compensation. Many of our teachers have other opportunities to earn supplemental income during the school year and summer months.
