SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
I. FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy, is responsible for the daily operation of Pharmacy Services, including but not limited to inpatient and outpatient services, sterile preparation, chemotherapy preparation, etc. Will be responsible for overseeing and coordinating the department's schedule, staffing needs, recruitment, and coordination of any special projects. Will assist with clinical pharmacy activities as needed, including answering pharmaceutical questions within a pharmacist's scope.
II. POSITION SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES:
1. Demonstrates skills needed to formulate, execute, and evaluate resources needed in the Department and improve the provision of pharmaceutical services
2. Interacts and maintains a positive attitude with administrators, professional and non-professional staff, patients, and visitors to achieve the goals and objectives.
3. Exhibits knowledge necessary to oversee the operation of the Department, including procurement, distribution, and provision of pharmaceutical activities.
III. MAJOR DUTIES:
1. Assists the Director of Pharmacy in planning for current and future needs relative to resources and improving pharmaceutical services.
2. Assists and supports the Director of Pharmacy in growing and developing services provided through the unit dose distribution system and any automation.
3. Responsible for all staff scheduling and monitoring time/leave, absenteeism, and taking corrective actions as needed. Coordinates staff functions to ensure consistency in providing quality services and coordinates the department's daily schedule and deployment of staff where/as needed.
4. Assists the Director of Pharmacy in departmental recruiting, orientation, and training. Conducts performance evaluations for the direct reports and reviews each assessment with the respective employee.
5. Regularly informs the Director of Pharmacy of departmental activities and serves as a communication link between the Director and the staff.
6. Assists the Director in coordinating department activities and relationships with other departments, satellites, vendors/agencies, and CO.
7. Assists with clinical pharmacy activities involving reviewing and interpreting all drug orders and maintaining patient medication profiles, providing pharmaceutical consultation as needed, within the scope of a Pharmacist.
8. Monitors annual training, competencies, and annual medical assessments as OHS requires.
9. Assists the Director in assuring that all staff takes appropriate and reasonable safeguards to ensure confidentiality and privacy of patient information. See policy - "Privacy of Protected Health Information."
10. Coordinates activities and develops a vision and a plan for the growth and optimization/ enhancement of the services provided
11. Assist in developing departmental goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and projects as they align with the Joint Commission's MM Standards, National Patient Safety Goals, and other regulatory agencies.
12. Assist in communicating and meeting with the department's supervisory and other professional and non-professional personnel
13. Assist in coordinating and working as a team with a multidisciplinary group for the provision of Pharmaceutical Services as needed
14. Assist with the department's budget and ensure monitoring and alignment with profits/loss
15. Assist in liaising with the CO team in coordinating enhancements and implementing projects for the Enterprise/Local facility.
16. Assist in monitoring all quality assurance programs to ensure adherence to laws, policies, and procedures.
17. Assist in planning and supporting the department's performance improvement projects and staff development activities.
18. Assist in conducting staff meetings to keep pharmacy personnel abreast of new protocols, policies, and procedures.
19. Assist in planning the development of new or revised services, policies, and procedures consistent with the patient's medication needs (including inventory control and accountability of drug products throughout the Hospital).
20. Assist the Director of Pharmacy with other assignments/projects as necessary.
