Who We Are
The Richmond Neighborhood Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the Richmond District community through our innovative youth programs at nine local schools, robust food security programs, accessible wellness classes, and community events and activities. For over 40 years, we’ve worked tirelessly to nurture this diverse San Francisco neighborhood and foster respect for all people.
ABOUT THE ROLE: Activity Leaders have a major role in working with our youth within our afterschool programs. The Activity Leader's main responsibilities include, but are not limited to, planning and creating enrichment activities for youth on a daily to weekly basis. Activity Leaders are also trusted to ensure that our programs are a safe space for all youth, and supervise all participants to ensure the safety of our students.
This role would start mid-August 2024
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will be responsible for a variety of duties, including, but not limited to
- Provides daily direction and in-the-moment feedback to the youth in the Beacon after-school programs
- Chooses, facilitates, and evaluates program activity classes, with coaching from the Program Manager
- Facilitates homework-help spaces that integrate in-the-moment academic support, communication with families, community building, and physical activity.
- Assists with hosting of programs events including family nights and culminating showcases
- Leads field trips, off campus activities, and cross-site meetings with prior approval of the Program Manager
- Communicates with the Program Manager regarding any programmatic, personnel or student concerns, completing incident reports when applicable
- Understands and maintains appropriate professional boundaries. Follows through on boundary violation reporting as mandated by BOE policy
- Responsible for completing incident reports when applicable and in a timely manner.
- Completes paper attendance reporting in a timely manner
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
~~Education: Must meet SFUSD Instructional Aide Requirements:
- An AA degree or higher or
- Official transcripts reflecting 48 college units and a high school diploma/equivalent or
- Completion of CBEST and a high school diploma/equivalent or
- Successful completion of the Instructional Aide exam (can take this in tandem with hiring process)
~~Must Haves:
- At least one year experience working with youth, ideally in a middle school setting
- Be able to work M-F a minimum of 20 hours per week
- Able to speak clearly and effectively with youth, parents, peers and supervisors.
- Be highly collaborative with strong problem solving skills and ability to multitask
- Teamwork: Able to collaborate/cooperate, using individual skills and constructive feedback, despite any personal differences between individuals
- A broad range of experience with various hobbies, activities, and interests
- Commitment to and a high comfort level working in a diverse environment, sensitivity to diversity
- Critical Consciousness: Able to weave equity and cultural relevance into all aspects of planned activities. Able to plan and facilitate programming intentionally. Understanding of marginalized communities
- Strong advocate for youth voice and leadership
~~Nice to Haves:
- Experience teaching and/or as an activity leader in an after school program
- Familiarity with classroom management techniques and knowledge of behavior management strategies
- Bilingual~ especially Cantonese, Mandarin, or Vietnamese
- First Aid/CPR Certified
- Former SFUSD students (especially from Richmond District schools) encouraged to apply
Requirements For All Staff:
- DOJ Live Scan Fingerprinting: All employees who have contact with youth under the age of 18 must be fingerprinted under procedures established by the DOJ. We cannot employ any individual who has been convicted of a serious or violent felony, as defined by the California Penal Code. The organization also receives updated information from the DOJ during employment. Pursuant to the San Francisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records on a case by case basis.
- TB Test: Every employee who has regular contact with youth is required to have a current tuberculin skin test or an X-ray examination of the lungs (with a negative result) prior to reporting for duty.
- Employment Authorization: Employees must be able to prove that they are authorized to work in the United States using any of the documentation allowed according to current I-9 processes.
- Covid-19 Vaccination: SFUSD requires all subcontractors to mandate Covid-19 vaccination: employees must be vaccinated or have a medical or religious exemption to initiate an accommodation and the interactive process.
