Resident Director Position:
The Resident Director is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the program and ensuring the health and welfare of the Scholars. The Resident Director serves as the head of the household and acts as a “surrogate parent” for each Scholar. Along with the Resident Assistant, the Resident Director creates a “home-away-from-home” atmosphere with a sense of family unity for those living in the ABC house. He/she is expected to show genuine interest in the academic and extra-curricular activities of the students, including establishing and maintaining high standards of academic conduct and achievement. The Resident Director is responsible for all aspects of the household and the program and is expected to maintain open lines of communication with relevant parties including, but not limited to, Board members, high school personnel, coaches, Scholars’ families, and host families. The Resident Director is responsible for managing the Resident Assistant and Cook on a day-to-day basis and reports to the Board President and Student Affairs Chairperson.
Responsibilities:
§ Oversee the daily operations and maintenance of the residence and ensure Scholars abide by program rules, house policies, chore assignments, sign-in/out procedures, and curfew/ lights-out rules;
§ Maintain high standards of academic achievement and personal conduct from the Scholars, leading by example how to be successful, confident, respectful, and well-mannered young men;
§ Participate in family-style dinners Sunday – Thursday evenings;
§ Supervise the daily activities of the Scholars and show genuine interest in their extracurricular activities and interests;
§ Ensure the safety of the Scholars and know where they are at all times;
§ Coordinate with the Cook on meal planning and assist in food and household supplies shopping;
§ Plan at least one-weekend activity per month in which the entire house will participate;
§ Share responsibility for driving scholars in the Madison ABC vehicle to academic and extracurricular functions as needed;
§ Coordinate with Resident Assistant and Student Affairs Chairperson to ensure coverage at the house at all times;
§ Maintain regular contact with relevant board members such as Board President, Student Affairs Chair, Treasurer, Academic Affairs Chair, Health Officers, Building & Grounds Chair, among others;
§ Maintain periodic contact with Scholars’ families, host families, and high school personnel, as needed;
§ Exercise fiduciary and budgetary control over Madison ABC debit card and checking account for approved expenditures, such as food purchases and student activities. Maintain expense receipts in good order and provide to the Treasurer. Provide input on the annual budgeting process.
§ Maintain program, house, and vehicle records, as needed;
§ Assist Scholars with planning and carrying out social and cultural activities
Minimum Qualifications:
§ Bachelor’s degree or at least four years of relevant professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
§ Must have a valid state of Connecticut driver’s license and an excellent driving record, both of which must be maintained during entire course of employment;
§ Ability to work a flexible schedule including being in attendance at the house at least 2 weekends per month and Sunday-Thursday afternoons and evenings (3-7PM);
§ Maturity, leadership, good judgment, integrity, strong communication and decision-making skills, as well as a collaborative and respectful nature;
§ Experience working with adolescent youth and understanding of specific issues facing young men of color;
§ Ability and intent to serve as Resident Director for at least one full academic year. Candidates are strongly encouraged to entertain a multi-year commitment to the program.
* The Resident Director may be employed part-time elsewhere or attend school, provided it does not interfere with carrying out all of the responsibilities listed above.
Compensation:
Salary is paid year-round and room and board are provided during the school year. During the summer months, housing and salary are provided, but not board.
