SUMMARY
Under supervision from an optometrist, performs duties of a clinical assistant/technician specializing pretesting and patient training in the use of contact lenses. This includes taking detailed patient histories, performing certain vision tests and measurements, ordering and checking in contact lenses and showing patients how to insert, remove and take care of their contact lenses.
Duties for this role are the same as those of the N3 Certified Contact Lens Technician. This position is for employees who have limited direct experience working in an ophthalmic/optometric practice setting. Employees perform the technical tasks under close supervision and direction of an Optometrist or Ophthalmolgist who must be present for any skills which involve direct patient care. Employees hired as Contact Lens Technicians are required to receive certification by the National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE) within two years from the date of hire. If incumbents fail the test twice within 2 years, they will be terminated but able to apply for open available positions within the organization.
EDUCATION/LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS
High School diploma or equivalency certificate (e.g. GED, HiSET, TASC Test) from an accredited institution or governmental unit required. Certification as a Contact Lens Technician (NCLEC) by the ABO-NCLE as indicated by the most recent certification requirements for positions is required within two years from the date of hire. If incumbents fail the test twice within their first two years, they will be terminated but able to apply for open available positions within the organization. American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) strongly preferred. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) may be required based on specialty.
EXPERIENCE
1-2 years’ experience working in an ophthalmic/optometric practice setting and knowledge of basic visual testing required. Knowledge of and previous experience in patient education regarding the use of contact lens preferred.
SKILLS
Demonstrated passion for working with patients is required. Ability to learn and apply the concepts used in optometric care is required. A strong attention to detail is required. Communication skills that can put patients at ease and explain care procedures accurately are required. Is able to insert and remove all types of contact lenses into patients’ eyes. Demonstrates knowledge of preliminary testing including pupil function, ocular motility, confrontation fields, amsler grid, color vision, lensometry, keratometry, vision (distance and near).
