: Directly supervises nursing care and all related activities of the Surgery Center according to the policies and objectives of the center.
Includes responsibility for all aspects of environmental control, staff personnel, assistance to physicians, material and equipment, education of personnel, and all administrative duties.
May delegate responsibilities and duties to other personnel, both professional and non-professional, but remains responsible for oversight.
Coordinates operating activities when necessary.
Accountable for, analyzes and evaluates nursing services to improve the quality of care given.
Coordinates Governing Body including Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement , Risk Management, and Infection Control Programs to improve patient care and Surgery Center services and viability.

3. Requirements
a. Current Registered Nurse license in this state-prefer BSN.
b. At least six (6) months surgical and/or recovery room experience within the last three 3 years-prefer ambulatory surgery setting.
c. Prior Nurse Managerial experience or 3 month training/probationary period.
d. Current CPR (BLS) and ACLS certification
:
1. Supervises and directs all nursing care given to patients within the surgery suite according to nursing principles.
a. Insures pre-op preparation and post-operative phone calls by staff personnel to promote continuity of patient care.
b. Delegates responsibility of each Surgery Center area including pre-op, operating room, and PACU to appropriate personnel for immediate patient care and non-patient care duties. Provides daily written assignments.
c. Provides for adequate and safe transportation of patients.
d. Insures availability of all material and medication required for correct operation of the facility.
e. Applies policies and objectives of the Surgery Center to insure consistent quality of nursing and medical care.
f. Maintains daily OR log.
2. Provides safe environment for patients and personnel.
a. Supervises care of Surgery Center and equipment to insure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability of all items. Maintains log for preventive maintenance for fire alarm, fire extinguisher, sprinkler system, electrical outlets, generator, A/C units, etc. Coordinates work with building manager according to surgery schedule
b. Directs all safety measures to prevent accidents, harm or injury in any way of patient, personnel, or equipment. Maintains current biomedical inspection/repair of all equipment before patient use.
c. Controls traffic to prevent infections.
d. Insures proper temperature, ventilation, and lighting to provide as comfortable as possible a working environment.
e. Provides and insures use of checking and control methods for determination of safe environment. Maintains necessary logs for refrigerator and warmer temperatures, OR temperature and humidity, generator, med gas, crash cart, accuchek, fire extinguishers, etc.
f. Maintains outside contracts such as transfer agreement, linen, biohazard waste pick up, janitorial, etc and insures that standards are maintained.
g. Coordinates, documents and evaluates (at least annually) emergency preparedness and (at least quarterly) fire drills.
h. Assures security of building, records, supplies, and medications. Maintains security of keys.
i. Oversees employee health program in coordination with Infection Control Coordinator.
3. Assists physicians during procedures through provision of adequate, qualified personnel.
a. Formulates schedule which provides personnel available for all procedures.
b. Assures presence of professional personnel at all procedures to provide safe patient care as directed by state, local, and national standards and Center policies and procedures.
c. Plans written assignments for personnel and delegates specific duties and tasks; assures completion.
d. Supervises and directs duties and jobs performed by staff personnel; evaluates at least annually.
4. Provides and controls material, supplies, and equipment needed for successful operation of the surgery suite.
a. Directs and delegates control of inventories to insure proper amount available.
b. Supervises care and cleanliness of equipment and supplies to insure good working conditions.
c. Evaluates needs for new or different items in regard to present and new trends and needs of the center.
d. Observes use and handling of supplies to decrease mishandling or incorrect methods.
e. Reviews and submits budget requirements to Medical Director/Business Manager as required and directed.
f. Provides receipts, invoices, statements to Business Manager for items purchased and received.
5. Provides increased education and technical opportunities for all staff members.
a. Directs program of inservice education with regard to purpose, content and need according to services provided and patient population.
b. Delegates responsibility to professional staff for daily education of others and self.
c. Insures staff attendance at inservice and other educational meetings-at least monthly and individually documented. Provides written minutes of staff meeting and education programs.
d. Provides daily opportunities of challenge and learning for staff to increase knowledge and experience.
e. Encourages staff toward self improvement and education.
f. Provides orientation program for all staff members that is comprehensive and informative.
6. Plans, controls, directs and coordinates all administrative duties to insure proper functioning of department and personnel.
a. Assists business manager to prepare fiscal budget and executes within board approved limits.
b. Follows policies in determining those of department.
c. Formulates and periodically evaluates philosophy, objectives, procedures, and policies of department to help others and keep them current (at least annually) and up to date.
d. Writes evaluations and efficiency reports on professional personnel and supervises reports of others.
e. Schedules and assigns personnel to increase efficiency and coordination of department.
f. Maintains all necessary state, local and national licensure requirements.
g. Assures accurate documentation of patient care; coordinates with Medical Records Director to maintain HIPAA compliance.
h. Assists in development of necessary written and electronic medical records.
i. Collects data for use in documenting peer review, benchmarking, sentinel events/quality indicators and reporting to proper personnel/authorities.
j. Serves as contact person during inspections from fire marshal, DHH, public health, AAAHC, etc.
k. Reports and documents all significant events and occurrences to Medical Director and Governing Body.
l. Maintains credentialing and privileging files for physicians, allied health and medical sales representatives. Maintains licensure and BLS/ACLS requirements for professional staff.
m. Remains informed regarding current health care regulations especially related to Ambulatory Surgery Centers and Interventional Pain Management specialty. Notifies staff, physicians and Governing Body of changes.

1. Meets center budget yearly targets. These targets include goals set by the Medical Director and Governing Body regarding man hours (productivity/cost) per case, supply cost per case and inventory levels. Other financial goals may also be set that this position will be responsible for meeting.
2. Links all staff evaluations to budget targets, listed above, being achieved.
3. Assists all personnel with problems as they arise: late patients, no-shows, late doctors, staff call- ins, etc.
4. Makes sure that all personnel: nursing staff, physicians, anesthetists and non-medical staff are on duty and ready to start cases on time; if problems arise, make changes in schedule to meet physicians' and patients’ needs.
5. Assist with preparations, positioning of patient, unusual procedures, transfer of patients, cleaning of rooms, stretchers and equipment as needed to get room ready and cases started, rooms turned over and patients safely discharged.
6. Provide coffee and lunch breaks, if possible, in all areas.
7. Assist physicians in any way possible to make their time an efficient and pleasant experience.
8. Has general supervision over all nursing and para-medical personnel.
9. Maintains confidential personnel and health records for nursing and medical personnel.
10. Orders medical supplies and medications as needed.
11. Assures that all medical instruments and equipment are in good working order.
12. Assures that all carts, specialty packs and sets are prepared and ready for use when needed.
13. Assures that emergency supplies and equipment are on hand and ready when needed.
14. Assures that lab specimens are collected and transferred to the laboratory.
15. Maintains record of surgeon preferences for various procedures.
16. Assures the sterility of instruments and supplies used.
17. Establishes and maintains an in-service training program.
18. Adjusts patient, physician and staffing schedules as needed.
