Job Description
Position: RN Unit Manager
Supervisor: Director of Nurses/Administrator
Job Summary: The Unit Manager will manage all aspects of the unit such as customer satisfaction, Admission/discharge protocols, and coordinate care delivery across the interdisciplinary team. The Unit Manager coordinates, manages, evaluates, and is accountable for 24-hour resident care activities, nursing personnel, and operations in the designated unit and assures the safety of residents.
Core Competencies/Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Oversees direct care activities by conducting frequent rounds on the unit to evaluate the resident condition and staff performance to assure that practices are consistent with evidenced based practice and facility standards. Enforces organizational policies and ensures standards of care are maintained
- Evaluates residents’ status and unit operations at beginning of a shift and ensure staffing levels are appropriate. Plans and delegates assignments to nursing staff
- Assures that physician orders are current, appropriate, transcribed, and carried out and that documentation regarding resident condition is accurate and complete.
- In conjunction with Social Service, ensures that families are advised of changes in the resident’s condition, Incidents/accidents, or other significant developments as indicated
- Participates in the development and delivery of resident care plans including participating in admissions, transfers, and discharges as needed.
- Utilizes the quality indicators and quality measures when available in conjunction with facility management to develop a plan of action to improve resident care delivery. Conducts root cause analysis of quality indicators that deviate from acceptable standards; identifies patterns and trends; develops a plan to achieve desired standards
- Participates in facility committees or the review of minutes of assigned committees that oversee specific resident care issues such as Care Plans, Fall Committee, Admission meetings, CQI, and Resident “ at risk” meetings Conducts unit meetings with nursing staff and communicates information and changes in policies or procedures
- Maintains notes and other pertinent records pertaining to employee performance; conducts staff performance appraisals, counseling, or discipline as appropriate. Participates in the hiring and orientation of new staff
- Monitors and evaluates infection control practices in collaboration with the facility infection control coordinator
- Collaborates with ancillary services for efficient, timely, and accurate delivery of service (laboratory, pharmacy, hospice, diagnostic) and monitors equipment/supply use for cost control.
Other Functions and Responsibilities:
- Assures resident safety at all times
- Maintains open communication regarding unit staff or care delivery with Director of Nursing
- Establish and promote a positive relationship with facility staff, independent physician practitioners, and area hospitals
- Conducts environmental rounds and identifies and reports environmental conditions that are issues or present a risk to staff or residents
- Assists families in understanding the facility’s policies and procedures
- Takes on-call rotations or after-hours calls
- Assists with clinical emergencies, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation
- Provides direct care as needed
- As directed, acts in the capacity of the Director of Nursing in their absence.
- Attends orientation and in-service as well as directs staff to attend as required by facility policy or state and federal regulation
- Other duties as requested or assigned.
Working Conditions:
- Usually works indoors but may have to work outside during outside events and parties.
- May have to get into awkward positions or work in cramped spaces.
- May be exposed to loud noises or sounds that are distracting.
- May be exposed to diseases or infections from contact with residents or other staff members.
- Often exposed to contaminants.
- May sometimes need to wear safety gear such as gloves and or masks.
- May have to handle hazardous waste in accordance with infection control procedures.
- Scheduled hours may vary based on facility needs.
Educational, Physical, and Other Requirements:
- Must demonstrate clinical assessment skills at the level necessary to meet the job requirements.
- Must be a licensed RN in good standing in the state of Florida
- The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations, Physical requirements may include frequent use of hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. The employee may be required to lift, stand, walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and smell. Vision abilities may require close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 30 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds
- For the safety and security of our residents and employees must be able to read, write, and verbally communicate in English, which is the most universally used language of our residents and employee population
- Must be capable of maintaining regular attendance
- Must meet all local health regulations and post-offer physical exam
- Current CPR certification
