The department has an annual operating budget of over $350M, operates 24/7/365, and oversees a $3B asset portfolio comprising a 7 million sq. ft. physical plant across the campus. In autumn quarter of the 2021-22 academic year, R&DE will return to providing housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serving meals at 17 dining halls, 12 retail locations, and operating athletic concessions and conference operations. Additionally, R&DE comprises 900 FTE staff in the following divisions: Student Housing Operations, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, Maintenance Operations and Capital Projects, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Information Technology, Human Resources, and Strategic Communications.

Position Summary
Job Purpose:
The role of the Stanford Food Institute Graduate Fellow is to coordinate diverse teams of stakeholders affiliated with an array of strategic initiatives, projects, events, and programs led by the Institute, in order to help advance the SFI mission, vision, and purpose. The purpose of the role is also to support the success of those initiatives, projects, events, and programs, driving toward critical timelines, milestones, and tangible outcomes across the Institute’s three core pillars: research, education, and flavor & innovation.

In support of the academic mission of the university, the Stanford Food Institute was created by Stanford Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE) with a mission to advance research, education, policy, business, and practice to promote a holistic approach to improving what people eat, how they access food, and the role that food plays in our lives. SFI is a platform to inspire and share ideas, and investigate solutions for a better food future by uniting a community of people who are passionate about delicious, healthy, and sustainable food. It is also a platform for advancing R&DE’s goals in support of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Belonging (DEIB). Job Duties May Include:
Project Management Support
❖ Serve as project manager for high-priority SFI projects throughout the year, which may include research, education, or innovation projects across topics of health, sustainability, DEI, etc.
Stanford Food Systems Community
❖ Support planning, stakeholder engagement, marketing, and communication for 3rd Annual SFI Food Systems Research Symposium.
❖ Support planning, stakeholder engagement, marketing, and communication for events for the Stanford Food Systems Community that take place throughout the year.
❖ Communicate with stakeholders who wish to become involved or are already involved with the Stanford Food Systems Community.
Climate Action Plan & Sustainable Food Program “One Plate, One Planet”
❖ Support SFI Director in planning meetings and meeting materials for the Food Systems Working Group of the Stanford Climate Action Plan.
❖ Assist with analysis, research, and writing related to the recommendations of the working group.
❖ Assist with stakeholder engagement — across the working group, other CAP working groups (e.g., Zero Waste), R&DE, and relevant Stanford-affiliated community groups (e.g., Students for a Sustainable Stanford) — in order to advance select recommendations from the working group that will be led by SFI over time.
❖ Support ongoing SDHA initiatives, programs, operational activities, and communications efforts to students in order to advance climate-smart dining, particularly through food waste reduction and plant-forward menus, and across its full portfolio of dining halls, catering, cafes, and concessions.
The SFI Graduate Fellow works primarily with the SFI Director, but will also support leaders from across R&DE Stanford Dining, Hospitality & Auxiliaries (SDHA) who collaborate on SFI programs. These stakeholders may include: SDHA Assistant Vice Provost; SDHA Senior Associate Director of Student Culinary Excellence; SDHA Associate Director of Hospitality Strategy and Multidisciplinary Programs; SDHA Outreach and Community Engagement Program Manager; SFI Senior Advisors; MCURC Co-Director; MCURC Research Program Manager; MCURC Student Fellows Impact Advisor; R&DE Industry Communications Strategist; R&DE Strategic Communications team as a whole; faculty and students across all seven schools (i.e., the Doerr School of Sustainability, Stanford School of medicine, Graduate School of Business); mission-aligned student groups across campus (i.e., Stanford Food Recovery, Students for a Sustainable Stanford); Scope 3 Emissions Program; O’Donohue Family Stanford Educational Farm; Stanford Environmental Justice Working Group; Stanford Office of Community Engagement; and Stanford Climate Action Plan/Stanford Office of Sustainability.
Requirements:
Approximately 10-20 hours per week (and not to exceed 20 hours/week except with prior approval)

● Experience with project management–managing multiple stakeholders, adaptability amid fast-paced timelines, commitment to meeting deadlines and coordinating project teams to meet their contributions to collective deadlines, breaking larger projects into multiple sub-projects and sequential steps, etc.
● Excellent communication skills–both verbal (presentations, facilitation of large meetings, 1:1 meetings) and written (reports, emails, slide decks, research materials, grant applications and project proposals, editorial content)
● Ability to work autonomously with critical thinking and attention to detail
● Technical skills, including experience with the Google Suite and ideally Canva
● Social media experience

Certifications and Licenses
If at any time the SFI Graduate Fellow is requested to participate in dining hall research, SFI Graduate Fellow will be required to obtain the following certifications once hired (the time to take the certification will be paid as working time):
- CITI certification - Human Subjects Research Protections - Group 2: IRB Nonmedical Research (All Nonmedical Investigators and Staff)
