A semi-skilled position responsible for the operation of light construction equipment within the Solid Waste Operation.
The following statements describe the principal functions of the job and its scope of responsibility but should not be considered an all-inclusive list of work requirements. Individuals may perform other duties as assigned.
- Operates and maintains landfill light equipment such as articulating trucks, water trucks, tractors, bob cat loaders, all-terrain vehicles, as well as other light equipment.
- Occasionally operates gasoline or other powered machinery such as mowers, trimmers, compressors, pumping machinery and saws.
- May be required to operate heavier equipment on a temporary, emergency or trainee basis.
- Performs routine manual labor tasks as assigned.
- Washes, cleans and provides routine maintenance for all equipment operated.
- Inspects each load for those refuse items not allowed into the active cell or a Class I landfill site.
- Advises public of any restricted debris and gives instruction as to correct disposal methods available.
- Operates light, automotive and landscaping equipment as required.
- Performs duties at both the actual working face and at other locations as specified by the Landfill Manager.
- Furnishes written reports of daily activities, vehicle inspections and load inspections.
- Properly receives, handles, processes and stores HHW, used oil and Ewaste.
- Checks loads of various recycling products, HHW and E-Waste.
- Coordinates schedules and prepares manifests for recyclable products, HHW and E-waste for transportation.
- Keeps daily logs and submits monthly reports to solid waste/recycling office for DEP reports.
- Maintains a professional and safe unit and work area adhering to established safety policies and the image desired for the organization.
- Consistently follows Board policies and procedures.
- Responds productively to change and performs all other related tasks as directed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:- Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and use of landfill light equipment.
- Skill in the operation of construction equipment at an entry level.
- Knowledge of the hazards involved in the use of landfill equipment and of safety precautions to be taken.
- Ability to obtain Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) as well as the Landfill Spotter certification through the University of Florida Center for Training Research and Education for Environmental Occupations (TREEO) or other Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and County approved training.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards involved in handling HHW, oil, and E-Waste.
- Ability to understand and communicate oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, managers, supervisors, directors, elected officials, and the general public.
- Basic knowledge of the governmental rules and regulations pertaining to the disposal of solid waste.
- Ability to operate light, automotive and landscaping equipment as required.
- Skill and ability in dealing with members of the general public in an occasional adversarial situation.
- Ability to operate equipment over rough terrain.
- Ability to perform manual laboring tasks under adverse weather conditions.
